once again: using any non-onboard NIC under SuSE linux
hello, for the third time i'll report my experiences (?!) on my journey to a working NIC... having tested the smc 9432tx (etherpower II) and the smc 1211 i experienced that both won't work. tested on a pm 8200/120 64/big scsi raid ;)/cd under suse 7.1 ppc. trying to initialize the interface (e.g. via 'rcnetwork restart') results in a hanging machine (blubb -- and away; need for a hard reset). onboard eth works fine (but only 10mb though). ok, so i tried the holy DEC 'Tulip' chipset, the 21143 to be exact -- using the appropriate driver (for 21x4x-cards ;) this results in *lots of* errors on the cli (fortunately, i don't have 'em with me, so that i can't give 'em to you -- perhaps tomorrow...), saying that linux isn't able to initialize that card... so my final question: is there *any* card that runs under (suse) linux ppc? i need at least two additional interfaces (10/100mbit) on that machine! My two cents with kernel 2.2.18 and Intel EtherExpress Pro100+... Maybe you could try this. The problem: after updating my kernel from 2.2.14 (stock SuSE 6.4) to 2.2.18 (also from SuSE, along with updated devs and modutils rpm's), the card hanged the computer during boot process. Of course, with 2.2.14 it worked... I solved by installing the drivers from www.scyld.com, but there's a catch: to compile, this package needs the kernel sources. So here's what I did (hope I don't forget something): - put the plain vanilla 2.2.18 sources in /usr/src, did 'make menuconfig' (no special options; you may also use SuSE's config file; it's in /proc) and 'make dep' (needed to create some otherwise missing files). - replaced the 'linux' link in /usr/src so that the new link pointed to /usr/src/linux-2.2.18 - compiled and installed netdrivers-2.1.6-1.src.rpm from www.scyld.com (follow the instructions!) At least this worked for me... Please note: I actually did *not* compile the kernel sources, nor its own modules (not to mention installing them...): I just used them to provide the correct (er... I hope so) headers to netdrivers-2.1.6-1.src.rpm. regards nicola moretti Timo Schoeler wrote:
