Just (a week ago) completed my first PPC installation "without" problems and I have dedicated a week browse around the system and figure out what is different between PPC and x86 (this is my first Mac and I like it) But were can I get more software? Freshmeat? Is there a single source were I can find software for SuSE PPC or do I just have to keep on browsing? From the X86 world I am used to find the software I want, but now ... Very little. I am looking for Java developing tools like J builder (yes I like Netbeans, but another would be nice) and and office package like StarOffice is there any out there? If there is very few apps for PPC and there is very little effort to port more. What can be done to change this situation (yes I know I can do it my self :-) I am basically trying to find out some more about the PPC community I know this questions have probably been answered several times, but I am brand new to PPC Regards Even

Even, The best place for rpms I know of is ftp.linuxppc.org. StarOffice (called 'Open Office' for PPC) has just been ported to LinuxPPC and is still Beta but can be downloaded from www.penguinppc.org. I don't install from gzipped tar archives very often so I can't tell you what is out there besides rpms. Generally, www.penguinppc.org and www.linuxppc.org are the best places to start. They area also the best places to learn about the PPC community. penguinppc seems to be independent from any particular distribution. Mailing lists such as LinuxPPC and Yellowdog are thriving hence why this list is quiet (and because SUSE is largely trouble free ;-) )The debian ppc list is pretty active too. cheers joss -- http://www.josswinn.org/PGP_key.html

Thanks I am on my way over there now. I just have to say that when I installed MOL last night and was able to run Word 2001 and Code Warrior 6 in and emulated window on a powerbook with 64 Mb RAM I was impressed. New to Mac, I have to say that if this is continuing it sounds like a great future. :-) Thanks again Regards Even

I've no complaints with Macs, although count yourself lucky you got MOL working so easily. I have never had it running on my iMac DV and have certainly tried. good luck with your hunt for software, :-( joss -- http://www.josswinn.org/PGP_key.html
imaclinux.net is also a very nice site! Phil

Hi, I'm trying to install my Epson print server on several linux systems (all SuSE 7.1) and am having really no luck. I've tried to follow the instructions in the SuSE Support database and things don't work out. I tried setting up the remote printer, but the test didn't seem to work. That's not quite true. Whenever I tried a test, I'd get a message like: lpr: connect: No such file or directory jobs queued, but cannot start daemon. Then at some seemingly random future time, the test files started printing (mostly raw postscript). I now seem to be able to print text files to this queue. I'm not sure why or how I got it working, but it seems to be working now. I then tried setting up the apsfilter and have had no luck connecting it to my remote queue. So does anyone have a good description of how to install printer queues for an Epson Stylus Color 740 printer living at an ip address of 192.168.123.160? (By the way, the print server responds to pings quite well and printing from either MacOS or Windows works fine, so the printer is not the problem.) Thanks, Steve

Does your printserver have a lp emulation? yast1 should allow you to setup a remote printer with lprold.rpm, I do that all the time here with a HP 4050TN. yast1 -> integrate hardware -> printer no color postscript printer 600 dpi a4 any port /dev/null 600x600 -> configure network -> remote printer printername: foo spoolfolder: use default servername: 192.168.123.160 remote printername: lp (may differ) rclpd restart Its possible that you have to remove the /var/spool/lpd/ directory first. Hope that helps. Gruss Olaf -- $ man clone BUGS Main feature not yet implemented...

I believe that's how it works (it's an Axis 1440). What I've got now is this: 1. I've configured the printserver as a remote printer and I can print text files with no problems using `lpr -Premote filename` (except it's missing a FF at the end of the print). 2. I've added an apsfilter for an Epson Stylus Color (the stcolor option) that should forward print commands to the remote printer, but when I try to print using `lpr -Plp filename.ps`, the printer just spits out empty pages as if a series of FFs are being sent to the printer. Is this the wrong way to use an apsfilter? Thanks, Steve
