I have finally decided to bite the bullet and transition from Suse 7.1 Mac to Suse 9.0 for the PC.
I did the same. Since then I have gone back and put Yellow Dog on one of my older macs. http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/
Has anyone on this list done that? If so, what were the successful steps you took to transfer the data?
I backed up to my server and transferred everything I wanted to the new machine.
I'm picking up my new pc tomorrow along with the suse 9.0 software.
I decided to do this not because I'm abandoning the Mac per se...but because I need to use my mac again as a computer :-)
I guess my question is...Would I be able to just put my existing ide drive from the mac into the pc, run the pc installer and have the drive recognised? OR is it more prudent to install the pc software and then transfer the files via FTP or firewire hookup.
My understanding is you can not swap the drives. I also understand that if you were using SLE8 you probably could and would have to do a repair once in the new computer. ( have not tried this, but I would like to if I can ever afford SLE8) I did the reinstall and had to use the ftp and samba to transfer the data. I have found that it is a bit easier to configure a broader range of hardware under the pc version and 9.0 rocks. Yast2 has come a long way.
Any advice/help would be appreciated. :-)
There was an email on the suse-linux-e@suse.com list a while back that explained some of it. I couldn't find it this morning and I'm running out of time. I believe Chris Mahmood wrote it around Christmas if you want to search the archive.
Hope it helps. Good luck,
will
