Hi together,
the kernel security update is underway.
At ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/next/ there is a 2.2.19 tarball. Could anybody who has a rtl8139 NIC check and see if the driver from the 2.2.19 tarball works properly for this NIC? We've had a report that the driver hangs the machine, but it couldn't be verified.
Don't have a rtl8139, but I do have a Intel EtherExpress Pro 100+ on an Apple G3/233 that used to work with kernel 2.2.14 but stopped (actually freeze the machine during startup, upon eth1 initialization) with kernel 2.2.18-0 (k_pmac-2.2.18-0.ppc.rpm ) and 2.2.18-14 (k_pmac-2.2.18-14.ppc.rpm). And yes, I also installed the updated devs.rpm and modutils.rpm. To get the computer up and running again, I had to download/install netdrivers-2.1.6 from www.scyld.com (and the 2.2.18 kernel sources, otherwise netdrivers wouldn't compile). The NIC now seems to work OK, even if depmod -a gives unresolved symbols in all netdrivers modules (and a few more, for that matter...). The strange thing is that I didn't need to do all this work for the Apple 10/100 card (Digital chip): the updated kernel/modules (tulip) see and control this card without a hitch. Sorry Roman if this is not relevant to you!
Please report directly to me. In case something unusual turns out, I'll summarize.
Roman.
