Can you look at /var/log/XFree86.0.log for special XKBcomp error messages about corrupted files? The Keyboard section in /etc/XF86Config should look like that: Section "Keyboard" XkbRules "xfree86" XkbVariant "nodeadkeys" Protocol "Standard" XkbLayout "de" XkbModel "macintosh" EndSection Make sure to remove a ~/.Xmodmap file.
