Not a problem, was just wondering.... speaking about growisofs, isn't it possible to make it generic to use mkisofs and anyother program for input? .... growisofs sounds soo ugly :( On Sun, Feb 01, 2004 at 04:16:11PM +0100, Andy Polyakov wrote:
I've tried the below patch, not with very much success, I have an LG GSA-4040B. When writing a dvd+rw i can write random locations, but when i copy a large file onto a udf filesystem, i get a rw error and the drive light flickers for infinity after that. The more times I write it seems the more I can write... very strange.
Quoting the referred page, http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/:
"... note that not all OEMs seem to live up to the promise of true random write access. As for the moment of this writing apparenly only 2nd generation Ricoh-based units (see dvdplusrw.org for generation listings) equipped with later firmware can sustain I/O fragmentation (see Technical Ramblings below for further details) and perform reliably."
Well, you can add SONY and apparently Plextor units to the list, but others seem to be incapable to provide for true random access, which you can now confirm with your own experience:-) There was reportedly successful attempt to overcome these firmware deficiencies, see http://lists.debian.org/cdwrite/2003/cdwrite-200309/msg00061.html, as well as preceding http://lists.debian.org/cdwrite/2003/cdwrite-200309/msg00015.html and follow-ups for background information. Growisofs is really just a wrapper for mkisofs anyway. It looks after the session-chaining magic and suchlike. You can always feed it input from something else, though, using the "growisofs -Z /dev/sr0=<file>" form. When I'm burning a full DVD in one session, I use mkisofs to make a 4.5GB ISO then do a DAO burn this way. Stick in a process substitution or something and it'll take input from whatever program you like, though. Stephen
