Thanks for the rapid response. However, it turns out that there actually is no problem. Packet-cd *does* work using DEVFS. After invoking my system logs, I noticed the following error message following the pktsetup command: sr0: CDROM not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive. I did not realize that a disk had to be in the drive before executing the 'pktsetup /dev/pktcdvd0 /dev/sr0' command. I only discovered packet-cd on Freshmeat a short time ago and this is my first experience with it. The program does not have a lot of documentation. But you should be glad to know that packet-cd does indeed function using DEVFS without any adjustments to any configuraton files. I will surely be using packet-cd a great deal for all of my archiving needs. Larry Andrew Piet lapiet at home dot com
