[opensuse-packaging] No upstream changelog available

One of the crap things about Cinnamon is that there's no changelog available from upstream; The Debian packages from upstream have no changelog also beyond the 'update to version x.y.z'... what should I write in the changelog ? - Does upstream create release announcements? They can be a good source for some few words to use. Otherwise, discuss with upstream some good practice... (depending on volume of changes, browsing git logs can work.. but actually only in few cases) Dominique -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+owner@opensuse.org

I am discussing this with MATE currently, but Cinnamon is another piece of software that misses logs; sure they have some release announcements, but my packages arrive usually before the announcement is made by upstream. When I catch up Clement online I'll try to nag him about it :) Thanks. Keep the effort to write the changelog reasonable though. If upstream is a just bunch of kids hacking around and you still want the package update, mention in the rpm changelog "no changelog available". Thanks Stephan, good advice (will follow); I'm talking with the MATE people (in fact MATE and openSUSE are actually working very close, which is awesome, and I don't speak of my involvement and they are receptive, so from MATE I'm almost sure we have improvements soon. About cinnamon we'll see, I'll try my best... NM

deb packagers never know what a changelog is.(That's my version of "changelog not available" sometimes) That's so common and so true, developers/packagers using Debian/Ubuntu are so careless about changelog since their packaging guideline is so weird which can be easily concluded as "you can leave it blank, but if you want to write something, you have to follow the "strict-to-byte-but-ambiguous-in-word" guide. May God forgive them. Marguerite -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+owner@opensuse.org

Yeah, if they seek forgiveness, they better ring God on that one, because I ain't a forgiving fellow :) But that's not entirely true; Ubuntu has nice logs in launchpad... and Debian often has good log records; the problem with cinnamon (not so much with MATE) is that the NEWS and ChangeLog files are the ones from GNOME before the fork :) I'll nag them to death :) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+owner@opensuse.org

Just as a follow-up: * MATE is fixing stuff and we'll get the info in the future; * Cinnamon, we gotta go on their release stuff as Clement stated, the 'TODO' list is internal to their devel team (I agree with Coolo here about the hack kiddies); I'll slow down the packaging and wait for their release (ggrrrrr) NM -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+owner@opensuse.org
