[opensuse-packaging] virtualbox 4.0.0 BETA1
Hi all! I already push virtualbox-ose 4.0.0 BETA 1 to Virtualization repo : https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?package=virtualbox-ose&project=Virtualization sr is always welcome :) see 4.0.0 BETA1 announcement : http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=36748 a lot of new features e.g. usb 1.1. support is now open source ... but I think, for our suse vbox package is a key feature "extension pack architecture" which means "No more OSE vs PUEL just VirtualBox (100% OSS) + optional PUEL extension pack", this means : in http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.0.0_BETA1/ you could find only OSE versions of rpm packages which should be the same like virtualbox-ose packages prepared in our buildservice (with one exception we don't use dkms - we prepare kernel modules directly in buildservice ) I see here duplicity work, what do you think ? bye -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+help@opensuse.org

Yes, the RPM SPEC files which were proprietary in the past, are now Open-Sourced too with v4.0. As for the kernel-modules - I like the openSUSE approach very much, without dkms. One *huge* difference: v4.0 has now fully Open-Source Additions, which should be shipped with openSUSE. Previously Guest Additions were not shipped with openSUSE, because they were 95% Open-Source with 5% proprietary code mixed. Summary: Open-Sourced with VirtualBox v4.0: (in previous release those were proprietary) -User Manual Sources -USB 1.1 -Installers (Windows + RPM SPECs) -Shared Folders for Windows Guests -- -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+help@opensuse.org

Some things were proprietary: -Installers for Guest Additions (windows + RPM SPECs) (openSUSE project re-created new RPM SPECs for openSUSE guest, but not for other guests) -Shared Folders for Windows Guests were proprietary, now they OSS -openSUSE project never shipped Guest Additions for Windows Guests So now you can take the whole binary "GuestAdditions.iso" and ship it with openSUSE distro. It should be 100% GPL now. Legal test is still recommended in any case. -- -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+help@opensuse.org

From: http://www.linuxtoday.com/news_story.php3?ltsn=2010-12-28-017-35-NW-BZ-0000 "No fork yet!!!!???? Yes I know the core product is still open source and there are other open source virtualization alternatives, but still.... I would love to see a distro that will open into an improve virtualbox (or any other open source alternative) Graphical User Interface. This GUI will include a drop down menu with links to download hundreds of Operating Systems to install them inside the Virtualization Box. Not only that but things like the Guest additions should be automatize so that the end user experience will be maximized at all times. Imagine Debian Virtualizing Distro, using VirtualBox. The initial install will install all the needed software to run VirtualBox. Then all the applications, etc. etc. will be install in a regular Debian instalation inside the VirtualBox and will be the first of many Virtual Disk inside Virtual Box.... So, once again, where is the fork... or better still the distro.... " I thought of the OBS when reading the above. That was a reply on this article: http://blog.internetnews.com/skerner/2010/12/oracle-extends-open-source- vir.html "Starting with this new VirtualBox 4.0 release, Oracle has reorganized the project so there is a base release and then there are Extension Packs, that extend VirtualBox and aren't necessarily open source either. For the VirtualBox 4.0 release Oracle there is now one extension pack which includes three new pieces of functionality, a virtual USB 2.0 (EHCI) device,VirtualBox Remote Desktop Protocol (VRDP) support and Intel PXE boot ROM with support for the E1000 network card." -- Richard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-packaging+help@opensuse.org
