Um, separate partition is perfectly fine. All local filesystems are mounted before syslogd starts (in fact before pretty much else starts either). It's when /usr is mounted over NFS, i.e. after network is up that all services started before needs to sit in only / . I would predict that about 10 persons in the world still use NFS-/usr ;-) Ciao, Michael.
