In installed 11.2 on system that was happy with 11.0 day before yesterday. I tried to follow http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Intel-HDA_sound_problems because it seemed there was no sound. In so doing I discovered that there is sound, but the level is much too low. e.g. in VLC with sound level at 100% I can barely tell there is sound. I tried alsamixergui, but it shows master at about 50% and will not allow me to change it, even if run as root.
If I login X to root, I get startup and shutdown sounds, and test sound in personal settings works. Also KMix sound control works, giving levels similar to those in 11.0.
Regular user login sound is missing. Logout sound works. Test sound in personal settings gives failure to initialize sound driver error popup (default can't be opened for capture, operation not permitted) and perpetually tries to start the sound server.
What do I do now?
BTW, my hardware is virtually identical to the above URL example. Codec is ALC888 on ICH8, but I cannot tell for sure which model. http://www.foxconnchannel.com/product/motherboards/detail_spec.aspx?ID=en-us... is my motherboard which says 7.1 Realtek ALC883 but lscpi says is 888. http://fm.no-ip.com/Tmp/foxconn-p9657AB-rear.jpg shows rear of motherboard taken from http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813186116

I can't find anything helpful in /var/log.
Thinking about the difference in behavior between root and normal, I went into YaST2 user management and found no users in most groups, among them cdrom & audio. I added those and a few logical others, then restarted X, and now it's only a low output level problem. With the weak speakers in my display that I normally use, the only problem apparent is that maximum volume is approximately equivalent to low normal output level. When connected to my home stereo system, the output is similar, but worse than, 11.0, in that the level is low, and there's a constant hum regardless of volume setting. At less than about 50% volume the hum totally drowns out the expected sound. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
