Thinking about the difference in behavior between root and normal, I went into YaST2 user management and found no users in most groups, among them cdrom & audio. I added those and a few logical others, then restarted X, and now it's only a low output level problem. With the weak speakers in my display that I normally use, the only problem apparent is that maximum volume is approximately equivalent to low normal output level. When connected to my home stereo system, the output is similar, but worse than, 11.0, in that the level is low, and there's a constant hum regardless of volume setting.
