[opensuse-marketing] 12.1 Release Date Decision
Coolo has asked in several places whether we should change the release date of openSUSE 12.1 to November 16 due to the recent shift in the release of our Beta. I personally think this is a good idea. Specific reason for this is because the original roadmap release date was to release on a Friday, November 11. This really isn't a good idea and I would recommend we release on a Wednesday to allow for news media to remark about thhis release, thus getting people curious in time for the weekend to download and install on their machines. Do we have any thoughts other than above for release date? The time is very short for us to recommend a different date or concur with Coolo's suggestion for November 16. So let's comment now here in this thread and by end of tomorrow I will forward the thoughts to coolo. +1 I guess the best would be to release it under the week, just to get a bigger press echo. /Kim -- -o) Kim Leyendecker /\\ openSUSE Ambassador, openSUSE Wiki Team DE _\_v http://www.opensuse.org - Linux for open minds -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

The sooner the better! Here in Brazil we're planning an openSUSE Brazilian meeting on 16th and 17th-18th will be happening LinuxCon. Would be better get there with 12.1 released already! Just 1 day could make a huge difference for us. Izabel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

Fair enough. Do you have a preferred date in mind? Also, if needed, we can get you an early release to prepare for the conference. We have GM scheduled around I believe the 6th? Only limited people are able to get this copy early before the official final realease date. So if it helps, certainly we can make sure you have access to that. Which is incidentally another topic we will need to cover before November. Who here, besides press, feels they will need to get a GM? In the past, we granted early download for those who were planning launch parties on the day of final release. Kim 15th would be perfect! Cause we have time to attend the "release time" also be ready to meeting and LinuxCon. I'd appreciate a lot :-D Izabel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org
I think 15th is perfect to make the release... We have two days till friday to spread the word about our distro release everywhere, plus the weekend for users to download and try it. Next week we take feedback and publish some articles about the release's feeback and in general blog about the whole release. 2011/10/3 Kim Leyendecker <kimleyendecker@hotmail.de>:

15th is Tuesday, so it'll actually be three days before. :-) One thing I want to mention, Press will have early access to the final release (via GM) but they'll probably have some embargo as to when they'll release their review articles. So wehther we make it Tuesday or Wednesday, most of press will have their articles already written, just waiting for us to say "Go!" :-) So its really up to us to find the sweet spot of timing worldwide. Izabel brought up the need to release prior to LinuxCon. And seems we are all in agreement, so unless someone else comes up with another issue by end of day, I think we'll definitely recommend to Coolo to release on November 15th. Of course, the final decision on the date is up to him. But I think we have made a good strong case already. Thanks! Why not release it during LinuxCon? You might could do a "live-release" during the conference? If not, 15th would be fine. don't be too strict on the date? Better a good release than a buggy one do not forget RC2 is nearly identical with GM (most of the time it is identical) and is available one week before release (time to press dvd) you can make yours demos with RC2 You can also ask to have GM in advance jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://www.youtube.com/user/jdddodinorg http://jdd.blip.tv/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

That's not really for us to decide on the marketing team. Only we can recommend ideal dates. Its up to the Release team to decide if they want to be strict on dates or flexible. However, while I do agree that a flexible release date would be nice to reduce buggy issues, I can also say that from this past weekend, that flexibility caused much confusion on marketing side as we weren't sure exactly which date and when to promote the release of Beta. Some of us were up pretty late at night with our finger on the button ready to release stuff as soon as we saw published Beta. In other words, there is no one perfect solution that will fit both sides. But, ultimately the first statement still applies: We do not decide for the release team, we only recommend based on Coolo's request for recommendation. That's it. Bryen
