[opensuse-marketing] New o.o-frontpage
![](https://seccdn.libravatar.org/avatar/fc93a7384532efffe55fba250abe1c3c.jpg?s=120&d=mm&r=g)
Hey! During Hackweek 3 Andreas Demmer and I made a new frontpage for opensuse.org, which will replace the 3-Box-Page we currently have on http://www.opensuse.org . The goals of the new page are: * pickup the visitor at the front-door * offer more information about the openSUSE-Project on a centralised page (more; not to much, many, etc., just a overview!) * stay conform with the openSUSE.org screen-design * make it easy for newcomers to dig into the openSUSE-Univers. About the page-design: The content is always placed in two columns (1/3 to 2/3) and the page is divided into two halves. In the top is the eye-candy logo with a short description (we are still looking for a better/shorter text) of the openSUSE project and the good old three main sections: software, wiki, build service. Links to all other o.o-pages are offert at the bottom of the page as hotwords, so they can be easily found with the filter in your browser or by scrolling ;-) The search bar above the the categories is not fully implemented jet. We plan a selection box (dropdown) in front of the input-field where you can select the section which should be searched (e.g. like Firefox search in the top/right corner). The placement of the search box is carefully chosen. It has a optical connection to the three sections but there is enough white-space between the search and the section-chunk to display that they are not siblings. It's in the upper-right where the most people look for a search (it's in these area on all o.o-pages). The lower part of the page contains, in the bigger column, informations like upcoming events, etc. ... what ever is hot :-) The smaler column contains the last 5 headlines from news.o.o (updates every hour), help informations and a link to shop.o.o. We made a small admin interface to change the content without the code- hacking and deploying dance. A localisation is implemented, too. But not deployed now. You can check out the draft at http://www.suse.de/~rlihm/index.shtml. We are looking forward to hear your opinions and suggestions. It looks awesome! I always liked the idea to have more information on the start page.

:-) As i said to you already: imho it destroys the design and is floating a little bit out of everything. Maybe try to have the search below the 3 boxes. But this is just my personal opinion. -- with kind regards, Martin Lasarsch, Core Services SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5 90409 Nürnberg GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) martin.lasarsch@suse.de - http://www.opensuse.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

It's great to hear that you like it! :-)

This means, that your default browser language is recognized and that you see the frontpage in your mother's tongue, as long as it is available.
Please !!! A language combo_box !!!!
No need for that: Because of the translated frontpage for language, all the links will deeplink the according language pages if available.
The person who installs openSUSE in spanish, have the front-page in spanish (default)
That will be the case, yes.

Hi, I'll just be frank. IMHO it's rather dull looking in its current state. I would stick w/ the current frontpage if I had to vote. I'm also getting an 'Error 404' right now on your example site, BTW. I do like the international drop down box - but don't get why the current frontpage would need a search bar. I like going to opensuse.org and choosing between the 3 options (get, discover, build) - makes it real easy. In the end I'm nobody on this list :) Thanks, Tehmasp On Thu, 2008-08-28 at 13:57 +0200, Robert Lihm wrote:

OK. WOW - what a difference. This link: http://www.suse.de/~rlihm/index.shtml is what I was referring to. If the design is this link: http://www.suse.de/~rlihm/en/ then it's REALLY good. Yes, it's awesome. The easy boxes are at the top as they should be and if anyone wants more info then that there too. Cool! Glad that's cleared up :) - thanks! OK, the 404 is 'cause I uploaded a php file and missed that the server has no PHP. We are organizing an other webserver right now. Sorry, that's not the way an announcement should run ;-) As workaround I deployed a redirect which brings you to my privat server where the page run fine.
I do like the international drop down box - but don't get why the current frontpage would need a search bar. I like going to opensuse.org and choosing between the 3 options (get, discover, build) - makes it real easy.
Agree about the 3 boxes. IMHO the search box is handy because you can (in future) just go to this page and e.g. search directly at software.o.o for a software-package. It makes ways shorter. And I think, it's a kind of back-up for visitors who feel lost. It strongly depends on user-behavior.
In the end I'm nobody on this list :)
As every body! That's one of the cool things here :-) Cheers, Robert

Hello, This is a Nice and neat page, it'll help a lot : Thanks ! By th way, have you tried to use thumbnails ? It could give a nice and clear effect too, and allow to have Get/Discover and Create on the same level. But maybe it was on purpose that you put Get it 1st, then Discover it, and after all Create it ? Fabrice Jakub Steiner a écrit :

Thank you for feedback! You are right about the order of Get it , Discover it, Create it. We called it "Pearl-Divers way" ;-) I think the short description under the Title (e.g. Get it) is very helpful for newbies. btw -not sure if it was already mentioned- we will look for translations soon. The page is localised, what is IMHO a big approach. Best, Robert
