[opensuse-marketing] Show us your desktop!
11.4 is out, and I think it´s time for post-release marketing now! Maybe with this idea: We can ask our users, to make a screenshot of their desktops and load up it to Facebook, Flickr or their server and send us the link. We can collect the photos and create a little "our user´s desktop show" with the screenshots. *What´s the sense of this idea?* We will see, how many are using 11.4 already. And we will show our users, that openSUSE is _their_ distro too. It´s a good chance to make openSUSE more personal to our users. *How we want to collect the pictures?* As I think today, we can use Facebook. The user upload the photo and post it to our profile. Also we can use planet openSUSE for that. Somebody blog about it, and the user post their desktops as a comment. *What the f*ck to do with the pictures?* At first, we have to make clear, that the project is allowed to use the pics for marketing. We´ve got the advantage, that we have _free_ marketing stuff. But the real thing behind this is that we have a (hopefully huge) gallery with our user´s desktop. *Why that all?* Because the user will think: openSUSE is my Linux! It makes the distro more personal (User: Darling, look, their´s my desktop! And their´s the desktop of our neighbours. And look their! Their´s the desktop of uncle Ronald from Alabama!) Another aspect is, that the user maybe see some nice desktops and get ideas of style his own. Hope you will like it! If you still have some questions, don´t be afraid to ask ;) thanks -- Kim Leyendecker (kimleyendecker@hotmail.de) openSUSE Ambassador http://www.suseusers.de.vu powered by openSUSE 11.4 RC2 | KDE 4.6 | Kernel-default 2.6.37.1-14 | using Tumbleweed openSUSE/Slashdot Profilname: openLHAG (OpenLHAG) Have you tried SUSE Studio? I like this idea. Maybe it's possible to make a collage at the end to show everybody desktops (collection). A wall including a favorite selection. I have turned on the tab for photos on the openSUSE Group, not the openSUSE Service/Product (There are two groups) Here is how to add your photo to the group page ============================================= We like to see your desktop under openSUSE 11.4, if you are member of the group it simple to share. Follow these steps 1) Go the openSUSE Group 2) Click on Photo tab 3) Click on "+ Add Group Photos" It will then take you to your photos 4) Select Upload Photos 5) Once it's upload then tag it with openSUSE 6) Under description add notes: Who you are. What you are running. Anything you want to share. Note: Any photos you have tag with openSUSE will be shared with the openSUSE group. So if there are photos you don't want to share remove the "openSUSE" tag. ====================================== -- (678) 636-9678 ----------------------------------------- Discover it! Enjoy it! 11.4 is out, and I think it´s time for post-release marketing now! Maybe with this idea:
We can ask our users, to make a screenshot of their desktops and load up it to Facebook, Flickr or their server and send us the link. We can collect the photos and create a little "our user´s desktop show" with the screenshots.
Awesome!
How do you expect them to send the link? We need a way to gather the links easily... a nice webform somewhere, preferably to be integrated in a news.o.o story... Who has an idea or way to do this? Yes, I think we should do a news.o.o story on this, including that input box. Then we need to gather the screen shots automatically and have a way to show them. Possible solution for all the above: - we can simply say: use flickr. These days, even I use it (didn't want to create an account earlier) because it has openID support. Then we tell them to use a certain tag, eg #openSUSE114screenshot. Then we have on news.opensuse.org and/or in other places a flickr widget showing these screen shots. This is simple and doable by us. But I would love to hear an idea (and willingness to put the work in) on a better solution which is ALSO doable by us :D
I also think it's simply a cool thing to do. Nice news.o.o article etc etc. And in the way I described (flickr tag & flickr widget) we can easily do it. Kim, you up for writing a draft news.o.o article in case nobody has a better way of doing it? Then we'll just go and do it :D
Hope you will like it! If you still have some questions, don´t be afraid to ask ;)
thanks

Facebook is awesome and all, but being the crappy, non-interoperable proprietary etc etc etc stuff it is, afaik we can't have a widget somewhere showing the images onour hopeage or in an artcile. So only ppl on Facebook can see it, and only if they are IN facebook. Hence I think we should go for flickr. Let everyone join the openSUSE flickr group (I just did that) and add their images there. All, While working on putting the article Kim wrote on news.o.o I realized we needed a follow-up. And in that follow-up it'd be cool to show the best 5 screenshots or something like that. Do Flickr and Facebook have decent voting mechanisms? Then we can say in the article that we'll publish the most voted ones on news.o.o, ask ppl to only add pics if they are OK with that and ask them to vote! You can log into flickr these days with facebook and google accounts so it is barely a hurdle.
So, everyone, add your pics to flickr. Log in, upload the pics you send here (gwenview & ksnapshot have a build-in flickr upload) and add it to the openSUSE group. And you can mark em as screenshots, do so !
Best regards... ^_^

For everyone: It´s really cool that you all want to share your desktops on the list here, but please try to use filehoster for the pictures to save resources of our servers :)
By the way, They aren´t any console only "desktops" yet, right?

11.4 is out, and I think it´s time for post-release marketing now! Maybe with this idea:
We can ask our users, to make a screenshot of their desktops and load up it to Facebook, Flickr or their server and send us the link. We can collect the photos and create a little "our user´s desktop show" with the screenshots.
If you still have some questions, don´t be afraid to ask ;)

You can use our tools for simple polls but not if you like to ask more than one question AFAIK. Still on this, I do want to get this out but just couldn't find a good solution. Now I might have someting: http://suse-art.org/index.php?xcontentmode=8021 the suse-art site is part of the opendesktop.org series of sites (eg gtk-apps.org, kde-apps.org etc) and is run by Frank Karlitschek, KDE and openSUSE dude (the guy behind Bretzn!). We currently can't easily show the screenshots on news.o.o but I would guess that there either is a solution to be written for that on our side (I know the opendesktop.org sites support the OSC spec*) or Frank could trow something together... The question is of course - how. Kim, you could contact frank, tell him about the idea to do a show-us-your-desktop and if he has suggestions on how to best use his site... If he's OK with that in the first place (knowing him, no worries about that). And if he can help us figuring out how best to do voting (probably just using the build-in voting of his site) and if we can somehow show a slideshow on a site of ours like the news.o.o article. Maybe he can even create a separate category for this, eg 114Desktops or something like that :d Now you're an editor, Kim, you can then edit the article yourself and ask for review etc. Yes, Kim, with great power comes great responsibility! @everyone: While we're at it, how about giving that suse-art a bit more attention in general, it's a very nice initiative... I'd much rather use that than facebook - frank is surely less evil than them . The little income he gets from the site is spend on things like Bretzn and ownCloud - I would gladly help him increase the clicks on ads on his site :D
