[opensuse-marketing] Facebook App, anyone?
If anyone here knows how to design a Facebook app, I have an idea. There's a Facebook openSUSE group that actually has over 1,300 members in the group. Some of us on Facebook may have noticed a rather cool app just before the U.S. Elections where the app would change your status to remind people to vote for (insert your candidate here.) Wouldn't it be great if we could create a similar app that changes your status to "openSUSE 11.1 is released! Download it now!"? If we could get all 1300 of those group members to use that app, that's some serious viral marketing. I'm all for embracing social media. Do we have anyone who's into creating Facebook apps? Generally speaking, in terms of effectiveness, I think this is a "nice to have" rather than a "must have," though -- as we approach 11.1 we need to be thinking of the most effective ways to spread the word. Sneak peeks is one of those things. Anyone working on any yet? :-) Best, Zonker Joe 'Zonker' Brockmeier openSUSE community manager jbrockmeier@novell.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

Don't know if we need the app - alternatively I think the group moderator could message everyone in the group. Generally however I do think we need to figure out how to get beyond preaching to the choir - getting on slashdot or such won't expose us to new people. Thinking of ways of leveraging Facebook, Youtube and such potentially could help us reach people who don't already know everything about GNU/Linux - if we could reach some new computer savvy people that would be even better. ... but alas, in the case of 11.1 I feel we need to worry more about damage control than promotion, since it's far beneath the standards you'd usually expect from openSUSE :-( -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

that suse 11.1 is very very bad in quality, beta 4 was better than rc1 or GMC. right now suse 11.1 looks like suse 10.1.. a kind of disaster or a SLE beta Andrea

problems with grub/mbr, problems with patterns (you choose kde3 and instead you have lots of kde4 stuffs (looks to be fixed for gm), with kde4 (that IMHO is still a game and not a working DE) problem with hal that in kde is not able to automount ntfs (fixed i hope) and ext3 partitions, problems with Networkmanager (and/or wifi), problem with gpsca webcam module (even if the problem is kernel 2.6.27 and not suse itself) and so on.. all that things worked on betas and on suse 11.0 ecc ecc ecc

Wow, that looks a lot of problems -if still in final version-, should we just skip upgrading to 11.1 ? Why so many regressions ? Fabrice -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

I'm gonna try and work on some bits of the GNOME Sneak Peek tomorrow,
but I've got a lot of work separate of the openSUSE Project right now.
So I think everyone who can help pitch in needs to, otherwise we're not
going to get these out in time.
I sent an email to the KDE list, about their Sneak Peek. Thankfully,
they've got a list of topics to talk about up right now :-)
Also, who's writing the official announcement of the GM on the 18th?
Zonker? Francis Giannaros (who wrote our 10.3 and some 11.0 Sneak
Peeks)? Again, if either of you have time, we could use ya'll on the
Sneak Peeks.

Totally agreed.

I'll be doing the GM announcement, and I'll post a link to the list on gist for any comments, changes, etc. later this week or Monday at the latest. Kevin, What basis are you doing yoru Sneak Peek on? What "new" 11.1 details are you going to base it on? I'm looking for some idea's and so far have hit, partitioning, yast in general, and a link to an older yast blog I did for 2.17 on 11.1.

I'll probably do one on KDE4, and very very brief on Gnome (I'm a KDE guy myself (honestly, more of a KDE 3 guy, but I brought up a box of 4, to get myself "used to it")). Again, any thoughts to work a sneak peek around would be quite helpful.

On the negative part, I will be doing another one on Compiz to help people whose compiz _DOESN'T WORK_ (which regretfully I think will be a big %) to get it to work using the XGL repository. Thanks. Hi, How about some GNOME screenshots? no doubt most of openSUSE users are KDE users as well, but I'm giving GNOME a try (after all editing the custom menu is not that bad) so may I post some GNOME screenshots once the 11.1 is released? I have 11 with GNOME =) Regards. -- Ricardo Varas Santana http://ricardovs.wordpress.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

I'd appreciate it greatly. I switch back and forth, but haven't had time to do a bunch of GNOME shots yet. If anyone's using Xfce and KDE 3.5 we could probably do with a few shots of those as well. Hi Joe, Nowadays I'm running openSUSE 11 with GNOME 2.22 and will install the 11.1 as soon as it's released. Then I can send the screenshots and I'd be glad to activate compiz for that ;) since I only use metacity for everyday work. Excellent! I did some screenshots with the 11.1 KDE GMC Live-CD, but I will use yours for the updated opensuse.org frontpage (screenshot slider). Greets, Andreas -- Skype: andreas.demmer ICQ: 103 924 771 http://www.andreas-demmer.de

The draft pages for the 4 articles have the list of stuff we want to cover in the Sneak Peek
