I know we have video ppl here, including our terrorpup and gnokii. Either of you interested in making something of this item: * using the screenshots/slideshow from the wiki to create a nice video (location on wiki: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Slideshow) I hope Robert Lihm can help with this one: * Create Themes for Identica / Twitter /Firefox etc The short video's for youtube etc are interesting - they can be screencast s or so, anyone up for that? * make short 1 min videos of openSUSE for youtube etc And someone at home in Facebook: * cleaning up the openSUSE Facebook mess of several openSUSE accounts, need to merge them somehow. Experts needed!

I hope Robert Lihm can help with this one: * Create Themes for Identica / Twitter /Firefox etc
The short video's for youtube etc are interesting - they can be screencast s or so, anyone up for that? * make short 1 min videos of openSUSE for youtube etc
I can help with this. I can try making a video or two

Unfortunately due to personal problems I didn't made it to the meeting but... * make short 1 min videos of openSUSE for youtube etc I believe I can make such videos and I'll try it in a few days, there is a tool that shoots video of whatever you do in your desktop, anyone knows how it is called? * Start a contest for screenshots with pics on flickr; and openSUSE love stories to be published on news.o.o We could start by posting screen shots from openSUSE modified desktops, a Greek forum made something like that and reached more than 2000 posts. * find contacts of journalists who might be interested in being on the openSUSE press mailinglist Those days the Greek Linux format is closing and another new magazine about Linux is talking its place, I have contacted the chief editor and he is interested to put him into a list like that, also he is interesting in taking news and press announcements from Novell. He is also giving us 4 pages of the magazine to write about and present the openSUSE tools like OBS, Also in those 4 pages we will present the actions of the Greek (and not only) news of the openSUSE community. Also I have some questions about some things. * Merging twitter accounts with planet some of them which are not already done How can we do that? * Start a contest for screenshots with pics on flickr; and openSUSE love stories to be published on news.o.o Can you analyze that a bit more for me please? What will the contest have to do with pics? You mean something like the 'best openSUSE company of people' ? Also about openSUSE love stories... and finally: What is Prezi? Thats it for now. I'm a reasonable prezi fan as long as ppl try to keep it a bit interesting - the rotating our dear pavol used in that link is the bare minimum I would say. Henne has once made a really cool prezi but I can't find it... Anyway. I think it'd be cool if this could be spiced up a bit, maybe with images and some rotation like in the one from Pavol?!? Otherwise I like the idea!

I dont see in any point in closing them.. also they are done by someone who likes openSUSE so we should not disregard his effort if he is not actively involved in the community as he may / may not understand the our situation since he / she is not spamming it with ridiculous content. But Thats my opinion, we can however add in our page maintaining we are the official openSUSE Page / Group

The wall does have some posts by 'others', just not by openSUSE. Who is the admin for this page, if it's the official one? If you add me as an admin I'll come help out with the page. I'm sure Chuck would contribute too, he regularly posts to the openSUSE Group so could post to both. I think we're stuck with the Wikipedia one, it's one of those auto-generated pages when they did that change to likes/interests a while ago. Pages and groups seem to function very differently. I'm in the openSUSE Group but don't see updates from it much - I have to go to the page to see if others have posted there. http://www.facebook.com/pages/openSuse-Linux/12783888575#!/group.php?gid=225...

I agree to a point with Manu, we don't want to upset fans who are trying to do something nice with pages, so I think the first thing to do is try to get in touch with them. We could post a link on their pages to the official page, and ask them to come say hello, and if that doesn't work try asking FB (not that I expect much from them). But being inclusive and friendly. Some may be happy to later delete their small pages and participate in official pages. They probably don't even realize they can do so. I think we need to continually point those seeking support to Forum, as the Facebook page is really not the place for these things. Forum is better than IRC as solutions become searchable and are there for others to see. I'm happy to be made admin for any pages. Indeed, I did not want to suggest to be unfriendly in any way - however having such a large number of openSUSE pages isn't very good so trying to work with them and decreasing that number would imho be good.

Sure. The trouble is I think getting hold of page owners isn't neccessarily straightforward. Will you be co-ordinating contacting pages and hopefully people or do you want to delegate the task? Also can you make me an admin of the official page? (Still waiting on News access too.) Helen

Indeed, I did not want to suggest to be unfriendly in any way - however having such a large number of openSUSE pages isn't very good so trying to work with them and decreasing that number would imho be good.

Hi Chuck & Bryen & All
Can you please tell us which twitter accounts are there too which we should follow are which are managed as you guys manage from a cotweet account
From Cotweet are only managed @openSUSE and @openSUSE_DE and btw dont see the other guys there often.

As soon as we are sure, I will set up the wiki page for social media contact.
Currently I am sure of the fb page, fb group and the linked in group and some twitter accounts but not all of them
http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Social_media_contacts
Please note that all the twitter accounts are not included in it also dated and this page is meant for reference only
Also, the xing network is dead so please volunteer to revive this up..
I have myself subscribed to Google News for openSUSE, and whenever a nice alert pops up I will be sure to post the reddit and the digg links for you guys
Thanks a lot Manu

Sure. The trouble is I think getting hold of page owners isn't neccessarily straightforward.
Will you be co-ordinating contacting pages and hopefully people or do you want to delegate the task?
Also can you make me an admin of the official page?

From what I remember AJ telling me, you have to be added to that account, then you use your own twitter account to manage it. I will look for the e-mail AJ sent me.

@openSUSE is the official account and mentioned at the URL cited below. The URL contains everything that I know about.

Correct me if I'm wrong. openSUSE is correct and not OpenSUSE. Maybe the title must be something like Official Facebook page of openSUSE. Anyways, this is empty. The facebook group if full of information.
I agree to a point with Manu, we don't want to upset fans who are trying to do something nice with pages, so I think the first thing to do is try to get in touch with them.
Is the logo and the name under CC? If so, can be used by others wisely. It's like living advertisement for us. Someone must monitor them (check for posts).
I think we need to continually point those seeking support to Forum, as the Facebook page is really not the place for these things. Forum is better than IRC as solutions become searchable and are there for others to see.
Forum boost other distro communities. Facebook is a place for advartisement. We need it for newbies. We all know the positives and negatives of the forum and IRC. Indeed, I note that this is the one with a link from the Novell front page. This isn't to say that this necessarily must remain the main page (given that others have many likes also) but, when we decide on the strategy for dealing with these, we'll need to run a quick search for incoming links and ensure these are corrected to our preferred pages, if necessary. cheers Helen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

I know we have video ppl here, including our terrorpup and gnokii. Either of you interested in making something of this item: * using the screenshots/slideshow from the wiki to create a nice video (location on wiki: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Slideshow)
I can try making a video or two
And someone at home in Facebook: * cleaning up the openSUSE Facebook mess of several openSUSE accounts, need to merge them somehow. Experts needed!
Here again, Chuck and Bryen need to step up as they already are admins at several openSUSE Accounts .
Ok, we need to list them. Wait, "we" = bad word, it's either I or you ;-)

Looks like I forgot a page: openSUSE http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2256834487 4808 members This one seems the official, with Chuck, AJ and others as Admins. Chuck, can you make Helen admin too? And Helen, can you try and get our news.o.o feed in there by default, it doesn't seem to be there... On the fact that we have 7 (!) openSUSE pages on facebook: Let's try and get pages that are essentially the same to close up shop. It doesn't make sense to split our membership over several pages - I'd rather have one with 10.000 members than 5 with each 2000. I'm more than willing to contact the 'owners' of each of those pages, if someone can tell me how to get in contact with them. Still however I have not heard any answers to a few questions I have: - does anyone know if it is possible to MOVE members from one group to another (merge groups)? - it seems there are different types of pages - groups, interest pages, forums?, who can explain this to me? And can it all be merged or do we need at least three pages like one interest, one group and one forum? - it is unclear to me how to contact owners of pages... how to do that?
Based on the above we clearly need to get rid of pages and move the likes (as far as possible) to one.
I'd say we should either pick the first openSUSE mentioned (most active) or the "interest" as that might be more appropriate.
Either way, who can add owners to the pages above, I dunno where to see that in FB?
Once we've made a choice for one page we can try and close the others, see if it is possible to move 'likes' and do a news article to get ppl to like the new page.
Cheers, Jos

I've had a bit of a hunt around, and my understanding is that groups and pages cannot be merged or changed. So unfortunately we don't have much control in that area, especially where pages have been started by independant users. We can't move the 'likes'. As I mentioned before, I think the first thing would be to put a friendly message on each page asking the administrator to get in touch and become involved in the project. I've spent half an hour or so searching for help and still can't find how to contact Facebook support! It may not exactly exist. So I think it's basically up to us. Unless someone knows 'someone on the inside' :) I wouldn't waste too much energy worrying about pages we cannot control; simply post a link there to the official pages and make it a 'housekeeping' task to revisit them once every couple of months. Remember it's not an 'either-or' - many people join multiple groups. It's a problem that the FB search function seems to rank results almost randomly. I found this nifty table that lays out the differences: http://compukol.com/blogs/compukol/facebook-fan-page-vs-group/ My personal approach would be to work on the largest group and largest fan page belonging to us, and if we have admin of any smaller groups or pages, to contact members and fans suggestion they switch to the other group. After a couple of months, delete any of our extra pages/groups. cheers Helen

I understand where you are coming from Kostas, and share similar concerns about Facebook, but I use it because my family, friends and colleagues do - just as many current and potential users and contributors do. We certainly need to take a look at Diaspora (though I have heard some concerns regarding its user agreement) but I don't think we should just walk away from Facebook. There's no need to "throw the baby out with the bathwater" as the expression goes. I don't think we want to invest a -lot- of time on our facebook presence, but people do use it as a means of keeping in touch and regular page updates are seen by many who might not visit other pages. Most content and effort should go into the Wiki and openSUSE News as well as the personal blogs that make up the broader 'Planet' (if I understand that correctly) and use social networking to push users back to that content where possible. Well, you are right. I personally solved this problem, keeping in two phases. Consider that as a suggestion, than as an argument. 1st: I deleted people who I knew from school, university, every-day life, people that in real life we didn't have any special relation or we have everyday relation so its difficult to lost tracks and kept the 80 I appreciate the most 2nd: To these 80 people I sent a personal message suggesting another ways of communication with me. I have my personal contact information on a plain .html page (like good old days) including some links to other social networks I use. I know it might hurts a little and this is human. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

(People don't like 100% automated updates, personal touch is needed, but we can still work to promote our own domains.)
I think Facebook will eventually be superceded by another social networking model of some kind.
Helen
Well, you are right. I personally solved this problem, keeping in two phases. Consider that as a suggestion, than as an argument.
1st: I deleted people who I knew from school, university, every-day life, people that in real life we didn't have any special relation or we have everyday relation so its difficult to lost tracks and kept the 80 I appreciate the most
2nd: To these 80 people I sent a personal message suggesting another ways of communication with me. I have my personal contact information on a plain .html page (like good old days) including some links to other social networks I use.
I know it might hurts a little and this is human.
Like Helen, I agree with the sentiment, however - we just have to face the fact that many people are on Facebook and not using it hurts us more than it hurts Facebook...
