[opensuse-marketing] openSUSE vs. Fedora
Hello friends! I want to do a presentation, that compares openSUSE with Fedora. I tried to install the DVD-version of Fedora 14 "Laughlin" on a virtual machine, and I think, it will be nice to compare the two biggest rpm-distros with each other. So, for everyone who wants to help: * I need some people who tests Fedora for a day and write a short text about it. * I need some people who tests openSUSE for a day and write a short text about it. * I need some people who tests Rawhide for a day and write about it. * I need some people who tests Factory for a day and write about it. So far, I´m looking forward to a hopefully nice presentation about it! kdl -- Kim Leyendecker (kimleyendecker@hotmail.de) openSUSE Ambassador powered by openSUSE 11.3 KDE Kernel-desktop 2.6.34-12 & using Tumbleweed This mail was composed under Linux Have you tried SUSE Studio? kdl Check the attached flyer for a few things unique to openSUSE. Aside from the fact that we offer more choice in terms of desktop (equal treatment of KDE/GNOME/XFCE etc), zypper is faster than Yum and Yast kicks ass, the differences are small. Which is normal - most linux distro's aren't so different once you have them up and running. Small thingy here, small thingy
On 2011-01-29 Kim wrote: there, but in the end it's XFCE, LXDE, KDE/Plasma or GNOME which create the user experience... Stability and hardware support are even harder to assess - it's so dependent on what you have that I'd never claim openSUSE suports more or less hardware than Fedora and/or Ubuntu or whatever... Kim, The below link it 's not directly related to comparisons between openSUSE and Fedora but related to the user experience point of view of the migration process from Fedora to openSUSE and may can be useful in some way in your presentation The article was split in 4 parts. You can find all of them from the first part http://softwarelivre.org/usesuse/blog/migrating-from-fedora-to-opensuse-part... PS: Only introduction is in portugues scroll down the page and you will see the first part of article already translated to english. . Em Sáb, 2011-01-29 às 11:33 +0100, Kim Leyendecker escreveu:

So far, thank you all for contribute. I had tested Fedora a little bit during the weed end, and I just want to use my openSUSE now. Sorry, but Fedora on VirtualBox was f*cking shit (Sorry for worth explaination, but that´s the truth I think.) So, I´ll write a text about the Fedora with some pictures in the next two or three weeks. But just test and talk about Fedora is boring and don´t works for openSUSE. My work to test Fedora isn´t a planed bulying on Fedora (no, no ones say this, but I want to say it before anybody have the idea to "ask" me.) It shall be a little "championship" between openSUSE and some other distros. Maybe, if you agree with me, I ask some people into the Fedora-project to test openSUSE and send me their opions about openSUSE and Fedora. Maybe, we can test some other distros like Mandriva (Ubuntu or Debian might be interesting, but I think, that´s better to just test RPM-distros.) so far, I´m really glad for the help and contribution I get till today. kdl Am 31.01.2011 19:45, schrieb Carlos Ribeiro:

Well speaking about distribution we have to test, today I found out
about Debian GNU/kFreeBSD (http://wiki.debian.org/Debian_GNU/kFreeBSD)
I hope I will soon be able to test it in a virtual box...
I love this game ;-)

I wanted to point out things which are unique to openSUSE. Frankly, I don't believe there are huge differences in ease of use, administration capabilities and hardware support between the major distro's... but suggestions are welcome :D

hardware support is mostly kernel, so yes this part is probably shared. But hardware setup is not. and there we are not always first (mandriva find always my printer, openSUSE never, and it's simply a network HP laser, pretty common) for example the openSUSE partitionner is unparallel with parted! jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://pizzanetti.fr -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

Am 02.02.2011 08:36, schrieb jdd: their are a lot of other distros in the world, and I think Fedora is our biggest "problem" (Not problem, like we have to do it away, problem like we have to care, that openSUSE can do it better as Fedora.) So, I´m not just out to compare the distros (btw, I don´t like the Fedora-distro, but I like the project.). It´s better to look into the project and maybe see, what´s different, what can we do better, to make openSUSE sexy for Fedora-users. (No, I´m not out to steal users from Fedora. I´m out to make openSUSE better and maybe get some Fedora-users who says: "openSUSE? We like!") So, SUSE Studio (yes, it´s part of SUSE, not openSUSE, but we all use it, right?) and OBS are important too for comparing the distros. If we just compare the distros, we´re gonna waste our time, really. The user decides what he or she use. As Jean-Daniel figured out right, the Kernel is kinda the same. A "big-patched" Kernel can make some things really difficult and just leaves the user sad and angry alone. I mind Fedora as a nice distro. To install it. For using, I wanna have my openSUSE 11.3 back, believe me. I can´t understand how Linus Torvalds can use the distro. But this is _not_ Fedora-bashing here. I just wanted to say my personal opinion. I´ll set up the text tomorrow, after I was in hospital to checking my knee. Because I´m ill and injured, I´m the whole day at home and can think about the text and some other things. Maybe you have ideas, and note that it not just "openSUSE vs. Fedora". if you found another distro to compare, just feel free to do it! good luck, thanks for reading and contribute, and a nice evening! kdl -- Kim Leyendecker (kimleyendecker@hotmail.de) openSUSE Ambassador powered by openSUSE 11.3 KDE Kernel-desktop 2.6.34-12& using Tumbleweed This mail was composed under Linux Have you tried SUSE Studio? Right, and RedHat invest more in user space hardware setup tools than we do (NetworkManager, colour management, power saving management off the top of my head). Kim, Exactly, that's the problem. Talking about distro comparison between openSUSE 11.3 and Fedora 14, they are on different stages. Fedora 14 was released with kernel 2.6.35. and systemd and openSUSE 11.3 was released with kernel 2.6.34 and sysvinit. Indeed, openSUSE 11.4 will probably drop down systemd for while because some small issues still not solved around compatibility and stability (conservative). What those 2 features means for users and developers ? Others features and functions depends on the Desktop user experiences and how the use them on a day by day basis. Here is the highlights for oS 11.3 and F 14: http://en.opensuse.org/Product_highlights (openSUSE 11.3) http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_14_announcement (Fedora 14) Comparing F 14 with any oS 11.4 Milestones comes with significant stability issues. And it would need make some clarifications to make the right justice. Hope this can help you. Surely you're not trying to install either KDE or Gnome on a machine
with only 512mb RAM?!
That doesn't go beyond this List!
Can you upgrade another 512mb at least?
Although not on topic, if 512mb is all you have to work with, I'd
recommend you explore LXDE. I don't personally use it and don't know
if RH/Fedora/CentOS support a similar minimal desktop during their
default install, but I've heard good comments from Users in the
Forums.
My 2 cents,
Tony

Jos makes some good points about how differences are subtle. I'm a bit
apprehensive about doing anything openSUSE vs.
I´ve got another, maybe great, idea. I can ask the admin of Pro-Linux.de, Mirko Lindner, to publish a article, that contains a "poll" to use and test openSUSE and compare with the distro the user uses normaly. I think this would be a great chance to see, what the users says about openSUSE and their distro. With the comment-function we can maybe clear some unclear things and maybe win some new users. What do you think? thanks and nice evening kdl -- Kim Leyendecker (kimleyendecker@hotmail.de) openSUSE Ambassador powered by openSUSE 11.3 | KDE | Kernel-desktop 2.6.34-12 | using Tumbleweed This mail was composed under Linux Have you tried SUSE Studio? I'd be very careful on that. Polls are misguided in several ways. One, people overload polls in order to give their favorite distribution a different light. And two, I refer again to "creatures of habit." If people are used to doing things a certain way, even if you show them a better way, they may still opt for the old way that they've been doing all along. So, we could end up with skewered results that don't really tell the truth. Most polls are simply biased, no matter how much they try to make the poll fair. I would, however, love to see more usability studies in general. Novell did a great job of investing in that a few years ago, but since that time, we've pretty much done nothing and just base it on comments here and there. A formalized study should be done at some point. Bryen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

Not at all, I totally get your point which is why I said in my last email that I am apprehensive rather than 'against". There are times when that question is validly asked and you are attempting to answer it, which is a good thing. when somebody asks you "why openSUSE", you can say simply "I tryed many Linux distribution and the other OS, and still always come back to openSUSE. I can help you with most Linux distribution, but I'm much more at ease with openSUSE" thats all I say, at least once a day :-) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://pizzanetti.fr -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

I suggest thinking about the words you use a bit more often - even I had to think twice and my English is fairly good these days - I bet several on this ML had to find a dictionairy for that word :D

I wuld expect that you have to 'tune' a few things - kill off file indexers, zeitgeist, nepomuk, stuff like that... But with 512 MB you should be able to use your computer provided you don't try to open 20 tabs with flash in Chromium on top of it all ;-)

Probably depends on the emphasis in approach and the target audience...
If the purpose is to differentiate, then "OpenSUSE vs" whatever may be
appropriate and probably graphically compare distros side by side by
feature.
If the purpose is to say "OpenSUSE is more Friendly than your Average
Linux" that was the alt approach I was suggesting by symbolically
having Linux (penguin) embrace the Gecko (OpenSUSE). This approach
more likely would describe features but not emphasize comparisons to
specific other distros.
Both approaches are likely fine. The first approach might raise
hackles but be more to the point, the second less potentially
offensive but could result in fuzzy comparisons.
