It's hard to draw instant conclusions about the numbers. Clearly, the marketing team is accountable in large part for increasing numbers where we can. But we had two challenges wrt to 11.3. The first challenge is that this is a rebuilding year for the Marketing Team. As I have said before we launched 11.3, my most important goal was team participation, not numbers. In that respect, I'm sure many of us can say it was a success. Team participation, commitment and willingness to learn and understand was important and it helped many on the team to better understand where their strengths and weaknesses were in preparation for the next release when we can hit it even harder. The second challenge is actually the version number itself. And as we recall, in -Project mailing list, there's been an ongoing discussion about coming to a better definition of what versions mean for openSUSE. I, and at least some others, knew that pushing the next release as 11.3 would be a message problem for us because the .3 change is perceived by many to be simply an update. That versioning discussion needs to continue until we have a clearer way of defining what each version release means to the public. I probably should also say that the lack of a highly-visible public figure to sell openSUSE had some impact as well. 11.3 was released without a Community Manager. Now that Jos is here, we'll once again have a public face to promote openSUSE. So my perception of those numbers is... We did good. We didn't do hugely well, and it would have been nice to see huge numbers, but frankly that wasn't the highest priority right now for our team. It should, and *will* be! And if you look at the numbers, I think it was pretty good without a Community Manager. Ah those numbers : mean also nothing. All installation for example I've done where outside of updates. I use local mirror, mirrored directly from switch in switzerland. Do the same at customers site also. Pretty sure I'not alone to do this. I can imagine that the scenari used also on site where bytes are counted or low bandwidth. -- Bruno Friedmann bruno@ioda-net.ch Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member User www.ioda.net/r/osu Blog www.ioda.net/r/blog fsfe fellowship www.fsfe.org (bruno.friedmann (at) fsfe.org ) tigerfoot on irc GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

please don't feel guilty at all !!! these numbers are very good. They show simply that openSUSE users love they distro and keep it for a long time!! this is *very* good. I *love* long term users!! Why should they change for the new one if the old one fill all they needs? and how could 11.3 compete only 15 days after the release? I see these numbers as very good a you have a large part in this *good* result!! jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://pizzanetti.fr -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org

Yes, long term, I've customers I can't upgrade yet. They are happy with their 10.2. some of them have 10.3 ... other 11.0 Perharps during september, there's some more migration. Also I don't think .1 .2 .3 numbering is THE problem. It's have been there from years in openSUSE -- Bruno Friedmann bruno@ioda-net.ch Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member User www.ioda.net/r/osu Blog www.ioda.net/r/blog fsfe fellowship www.fsfe.org (bruno.friedmann (at) fsfe.org ) tigerfoot on irc GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+help@opensuse.org
