I think it's the start to something really great. I don't know how
others feel about it, but it could be interesting to add to the "How
to Participate" page as something of a "New Contributors Starter
Guide". http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:How_to_participate
As a semi-new user still myself, when I have questions I have a person
or two (or three) I can send an email to or find on IRC that help me
with those questions and guide me along; That is very helpful. I would
like to help by documenting all of this experience similar to what you
did and then I can share it with you and combine the information to
make a nice little guide newbies can use to get started and subside
some of the "cold feet" syndrome many encounter that prevent them from
becoming active contributors. Among the many things I like to (or
would like to) do with the project is help recruit and guide more new
contributors to the project.

Ages ago we wrote this article on how to participate (especially for non-coders). It's not finished yet. I'd been thinking of developing each section into a full length short article for a magazine series but never had the time to do anything with it.
Given the current discussion on new user participation, I wondered if it was worth doing something with. Open to ideas.

(also, do you remember the long OBS article we wrote and translated a while ago, did that ever find a home? It would be a shame for it to just disappear.)
