When someone new joins there has to be at least one person (mentor) who will guide new folks and answer their questions otherwise that new person will most likely loose motivation and hit the road elsewhere. That theory doesn't stick with individuals that have inner motivation and they don't need external motivators in order do do something for community. From start they'll need a bit help but afterwards they'll initiate projects.
