[opensuse-m17n] Replace scim with IBUS
Hi all, I request replace SCIM to IBUS. SCIM upstream is almost dead. We should not keep an unmaintained software in openSUSE. IBUS (http://code.google.com/p/ibus/), a new developed input method is very active and full functionality, and other distributions like Ubuntu (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/desktop-karmic-input-methods) and Fedora already had done this. We have some contributors done the IBUS packaging at OBS https://build.opensuse.org/project/show?project=home:swyear:ibus . (Good work, swyear!) Everything is OK on my openSUSE 11.2 box except fail to enable it in a gnomesu window, but this is not a problem as other distributions don't have this bug. Do we have any chance to push IBUS into 11.3? Thanks. BR, Mingxi -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-m17n+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-m17n+help@opensuse.org

It's fine to push IBUS to 11.3, but I strongly disagree to *drop* SCIM. IBUS doesn't give full functionalties SCIM provides yet. So, make IBUS and SCIM parallel-installable (i.e. adjust the xim setup priority right), and test the parallel installation on Factory (not 11.2!). If this works, just do osc submitreq to Factory from M17N repo. osc will warn you that no package in the destination, but it's fine for new packages. If things go well with IBUS and people are happy with it, then we can gradually drop SCIM. But I guess dropping SCIM will happen first after 11.3. thanks, Takashi -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-m17n+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-m17n+help@opensuse.org

+1 When I tested IBus last year, I got some troubles in inputting Japanese with IBus. Maybe we need some more test before dropping SCIM. I've recently installed iBus related packages from M17N repo and found some problems in inputting Japanese by iBus-Anthy on flash sites. 1) If iBus related packages are installed and iBus is set as default input method, flash doesn't work on Firefox and Chromium browser (at least). If I launch those browsers with "GTK_IM_MODULE=xim", flash will work. 2) Can't input any characters into text box on flash site. I know this is a known issue and tried a workaround (installing Flash Player 10.1 beta) which is introduced at http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=19926 But I couldn't successfully install Flash Player 10.1 beta to my environment (openSUSE 11.2 x86_64). :-( # I couldn't see any flash plugin on "about:plugins" page on Firefox. With SCIM-Anthy, I can input characters into text box on flash site, if I launch Firefox with "GTK_IM_MODULE=xim". As a Japanese user, unless those problems won't be solved, I can't agree to treat iBus as a default input method at least in Japanese environment. I suppose the flash player problem isn't specific to Japanese locale? Until now, the locale supplement info isn't provided in ibus spec file, so it won't be installed automatically unlike scim. Also, we can adjust the priority of input method per language level (via /etc/X11/xim.d/* symlink) fairly easily. thanks, Takashi -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-m17n+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-m17n+help@opensuse.org
