Missing Big5 Font for GNU Emacs
Im using the GNU Emacs with MULE to write CJK-LaTeX documents on a SuSE 7.3 system. I have installed the Arphic Truetype Fonts and I can successfully display Chinese texts (written on a different system with SuSE 7.2) using Xdvi on the system in question. However in GNU Emacs there are only blank squares where the Chinese characters should be. With GB everything works fine i.e. I can see the characters on the screen. I had the same problem on the SuSE 7.2 system where it was solved by two packages of Chinese Fonts included in the 7.2 distribution but missing in the 7.3 distribution. I could not find the packages on the ftp server too (maybe I just dont know where to look). What is the solution to this problem on 7.3? I'm sticking to the GNU Emacs/MULE system because I had terrible problems in trying to setup xcin (Twice I had to reinstall Linux in the end before I gave up). Unfortunately I cannot spend time on trying at the moment and GNU Emacs/MULE seems to be OK for my work. I hope it's just a small trick to perform. Friedrich

Same as on 7.2, you need ifntchia.rpm. This is among the packages which were omitted on SuSE Linux 7.3 "German" and "International-1". It is available on SuSE Linux 7.3 "International-2". The 7.3 FTP version, which contains all packages, wasn't yet published, therefore you couldn't yet find ifntchia.rpm on the FTP server. This is a simple package containing only bitmap fonts, no executables, no dependencies on any libraries, therefore the package from SuSE Linux 7.2 should work on SuSE Linux 7.3 as well. Now the 7.3 FTP version is published and you can find packages for SuSE Linux 7.3 here: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/7.3/suse/x2/ifntchia.rpm

The SuSE Linux 7.3 xcin packages seem to work OK but ...

... if you are happy with Emacs/MULE, you probably don't need to bother with xcin. -- Mike Fabian <mfabian@suse.de> http://www.suse.de/~mfabian 睡眠不足はいい仕事の敵だ。
