[opensuse-kernel] Evergreen 13.1 kernel - revisited
Hello, I'm currently rethinking the decision to base Evergreen 13.1 kernel on SLE12 one; I would like to discuss the option to base it on SLE12-SP1 kernel instead. When I started planning the kernel for Evergreen 13.1, using SLE12 for it was a natural choice: expected end of 13.1 regular support was about half a year after SLE12 release and SLE12 had 3.12 kernel which was close enough to 3.11 we present in 13.1. This kernel is already available for anyone wishing to use it in home:mkubecek:evergreen-13.1 OBS repository and AFAIK some people are running it on their 13.1 systems (me, for instance). However, a few things changed since the original decision and now it looks like 13.1 is going to be supported until shortly after SLE12 SP1 is released. As SLE12-SP1 kernel is also 3.12 (but with many additional backports), basing Evergreen 13.1 kernel on SLE12-SP1 would have some advantages while the transition would be less demanding than moving to a new base version. I tried to gather the pros and cons of the transition: + more backports, mostly drivers but also some "core" functionality + some non-critical fixes that were too intrusive for a maintenance update + longer regular support - current users might encounter some problems (like need to rebuild 3rd party modules) - SLE12 is more mature after more than year, SLE12-SP1 will be relatively fresh If it was only up to me, I would probably go on with the transition to SLE12-SP1. But I would like to hear from current evergreen-13.1 kernel users and users planning to use Evergreen 13.1 when 13.1 regular support finishes. What factors go into kernel choice besides these? I know Fedora is considered bleeding edge by many, very much in constast to openSUSE's more moderate policy, yet I'm puzzled how openSUSE kernel updates policy can be so vastly different from Fedora's. openSUSE 13.2 was released last November with 3.16.6, and has only 3 versions in /update/, having just reached 3.16.7-24 mere hours ago. Fedora 21 was released about a month later with 3.17.4, subsequently updated to 3.18.x, then a series of 3.19.x, then a 4.0.x series, and latest is 4.1.4. I have a bunch of 13.1 installations, about half on 3.11, the rest on your 3.12. I can't tell any difference. I can't help but think that given any two kernel X.XX choices that the newer would be a no-brainer. Who's getting shafted by running Fedora? It seems like Evergreen might be candidate for a kernel updates policy more like Fedora's. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I hope that does not mean that Evergreen 13.1 drops support for the 32 bit arch. :-? - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. No, it does not. After all, moving from SLE12 to SLE12-SP1 kernel does not mean any difference from this point of view (i586 has been dropped even in SLE12 GA). On the other hand, while I usually at least boot and run new kernels for a few days before committing them to home:mkubecek:evergreen-13.1 OBS project, I don't have any system to actually test i586 builds at the moment; together with the fact that there is no i586 SLE12 release it means that i586 builds are only build tested (for now, at least). I have just installed your Evergreen candidate kernel on one of my remaining i686 machines. It's being booted several times each week so should be a good test. One thing I have noticed at first boot is the following error message (twice): Problem loading in-kernel X.509 certificate (-19) This was discussed before and fixed on openSUSE 13.2: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=925479 I suppose the same kind of fix would have to be applied to your kernel. Thank you for the report. I'll disable CONFIG_SYSTEM_TRUSTED_KEYRING in the config. The SLE12-SP1 based kernel (not public yet) doesn't show the message (on a system where SLE12 based one does), possibly because it inherited CONFIG_PKCS7_TEST_KEY so that it may not need a fix. As nobody objected to the plan to base Evergreen 13.1 kernel on SLE12-SP1 one (rather than SLE12 GA one) and there were some voices supporting the idea, I'm going to go on with this plan. I already have first SP1 based build running on one of my machines and so far everything looks good but I'm not going to publish it in OBS until SP1 is released. Before that, there will be most likely one more update based on SLE12 GA kernel. Thanks for taking care of it. And sharing the build once it will be available. I too want to thank Michal for taking care of the Evergreen users (I'm not one of them, but I think making their life easy is good for our community).

I hope you are eager to test it, and not angry :-P Best regards, seife -- Stefan Seyfried "For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for nature cannot be fooled." -- Richard Feynman -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+owner@opensuse.org
