[opensuse-kernel] What does this mean?
I just updated my 13.2 on my laptop and, of course, had the *-desktop kernel thrown out and replaced by the new you-beaut *-default kernel. At the end of the replacement process I got the following message: Some kernel modules could not be included: sd_mod unix atkbd i8042 ext4 swap autofs4 ipv6 Why have these modules been excluded and what is the effect of them not being included? Hm, why do you say "of course"? I just updated three of my 13.2 boxen, and still have kernel-desktop, with no 'default' kernels in sight other than the SLE kernels I built and installed myself. -Mike -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+owner@opensuse.org

Ah, of course! :-) . I fell for something which I try and point out to others - but I do have a small excuse for this :-) . I assume that you cannot see my signature/Tagline which shows what I am using as a system. I am using kernel-desktop 4.2.2-1 which comes from '*/Kernel:/stable/standard/'. I am guessing that you last had a kernel update in the second week of August (3.16.7-24.1). If I had (a signature) with kernel version in it, I'd have to update the silly thing multiple times a day :) -Mike -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+owner@opensuse.org

There are built into the -desktop kernel, so they are no external kernel moules for it. dracut tries to add them as modules, but fails as they are not there. There is nothing to worry about, the message is pretty much expected. But why are those messages shown? I guess there exists a possibility to find out whether those modules are built in or not, right? Not directly. There could be some form of whitelist where the warning is not shown or so.

Well it's a bit more than just a simple "irritation". Users don't usually take such a laid back approach to what is installed on their systems. It seems that those modules were built-in into the *-desktop kernel (which I have been using since it became available and which saved me compiling my own because of the CONFIG_HZ at that time being set to only 250 -- and now we are 'back to the future' :-( ) because there was a need for them. If there was a need for them then the question has to be asked as to why suddenly they are not needed and are excluded. My question probably has only a "ho-hum" affect on people who deal with the kernel 24/7/365 but to me seeing that something like "ext4" and "ipv6" have been excluded raises serious concerns because all my paritions are formatted in ext4, and ipv6 is used to access web sites using this new numbering system. So, with at least these 2 modules "excluded", what effect does it have on my system? Good, bad, no affect, what? That would be very nice.

Yes, I have seen several posts about those messages. People see them as important errors, because after all, they affect the kernel update, and if it is bad, the system will not boot. Even experienced users are confused. I do know that dracut is excessively verbose, so I should ignore whatever it says. But I have no way to know if there is some message in the list that is important but I ignore because there is so much noise... :-( IMO, dracut should be modified to keep silent, and only write about real errors. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. Because they are compiled into the kernel and dracut fails to parse /lib/modules/<ver>/modules.builtin or does not parse it at all. Olaf -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+owner@opensuse.org

This whole thing is getting just a tad out of hand :-( . Marcus states that these are built into the *-desktop kernel - fine. But we are talking here about the new *-DEFAULT kernel which has *replaced* the *-desktop kernel which is now kapoot, gone, not to be seen once you get to kernel 4.2.2.x and beyond. It is not broken. They were built statically into -desktop, now they are loadable modules again. Or the other way round. And since you have some config which tells dracut to include those modules in initrd, dracut complains because they are no longer available. This might be because you are using a new kernel with old dracut. Or because you changed the dracut config. Or whatever. So what. Does anything no longer work for you? It has nothing to do with using non-default kernels; the same is observed using stock 13.2 kernels as well.-- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+owner@opensuse.org

Well, then someone who cares should find out why dracut wants to include those modules and fix that. Please, report this into bugzilla so it could get properly tracked and eventually fixed. Best Regards, Petr -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kernel+owner@opensuse.org
