[opensuse-kde] KDE:KDE4:* Repository Changes, Step 2
Hello, the KDE:KDE4:Factory:Desktop repositories now contain KDE 4.2 development snapshot (4.1.87) packages. This is also the repository that will contain KDE 4.2 RC1, KDE 4.2 and first bugfixes releases of KDE 4.2 in near future. If you have been using KDE:KDE4:UNSTABLE:* repositories the last weeks you likely want to change them to KDE:KDE4:Factory:* + corresp. Community NOW! The next packages that will appear in the KDE:KDE4:UNSTABLE:* repositories will be snapshots from trunk representing very early KDE 4.3 development. Bye, Steve -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

No idea, about what does it complain if you lock those packages? Bye, Steve -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Here is my theory: there is a conflict between the KDE:KDE4:Factory:Desktop & compiz-kde4 and you selected to deinstall it which triggered the selection of compiz-gnome to fulfill the compiz-window-decorator requirement of compiz. So either deinstall compiz*, install compiz-kde instead, ignore dependencies of compiz-kde4, ... Contrary to Microsoft Corporation, we should be knowing what we are doing... Now what's up you guys ? Do we pull it thru in a clean way with 4.2 or do we switch to Ubuntu ? JPA On Monday 12 January 2009 10:40, Stephan Binner wrote:

How does this relate to an assumed dependency issue of compiz? And who is "we"? Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Just switched back from UNSTABLE to Factory and run a update. There are still a few packages remaining where UNSTABLE provided newer versions than Factory now. Should I downgrade them manually to get a clean installation ? Or just wait for the next Factory update ? The packages are: Unstable Factory automoc4 0.9.87-23.39 0.9.87-20.8 google-gadgets 0.10.4.svn-21.1 0.10.4.svn-1.2 libical0 0.42-8.1 0.42-3.1 libmsn0_1 3.9.91-2.2 3.9.91-1.1 PolicyKit-kde 0.2-21.18 0.2-20.12 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Build revisions, not versions. I don't see hoo this could cause trouble atm. Bye, Steve -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

If I may ask, what is the purpose of KDE4:/STABLE ? Will it in the future offer newer KDE 4.1.x packages like 4.1.4? If I want a reasonably stable desktop, but newer than KDE 4.1.3 that comes with openSUSE 11.1, what repo do you recommend? Regards Malte -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
Hey, KDE 4.2 is reasonably stable, but I recommend sticking to 4.1.3 till the release of 4.2 at the end of january. KDE 4.1.4 won't be packaged into stable as far as I know, to keep 4.1.3 just with critical bug fixes and focus on 4.2. (4.1.4 doesn't bring anything exiting anyways as far as I heard, see 4.1.3 changelog) The KDE:KDE4:Factory repo now contains 4.2 as mentioned by Stephan Binner, they will stay there and get updated till it is sure 4.3 will go into opensuse 11.2 and is atleast deemed solid. It is not decided yet what to do with 4.2 after this step has been taken. If you decide to switch to KDE:KDE4:Factory keep an eye on the mailinglist and/or blogposts to be notified about new repository changes. Stable refers to opensuse, it contains the KDE version that the last stable opensuse release shipped. So currently it is 4.1.3, since 11.1 shipped that version and it will not change. It will only get security patches and maybe for some really grave bugs, if there are any. openSUSE never supplied a new version via YOU and STABLE is basically 11.1+YOU updates. If KDE 4.1 suits you, do not use any repo, but stick with the packages shipped with 11.1. If you want new features, you would not be interested in another KDE 4.1 version anyway, hence use the Factory: repo, which contains KDE 4.2. I don't fully agree, STABLE has KDE 4.1.3 "release 69.2" whereas openSUSE 11.1 came with KDE 4.1.3 "release 4.9". So they seem to fix/update things in STABLE beyond YOU, what they do not fix/update with the shipped openSUSE version... I just upgraded from "release 4.9" of openSuSE 11.1 to "release 69.2"

Yes, I'm especially interested in the new Kopete version of KDE 4.2 since it fixes some things that affect me, so I'll give it a try. I hope KDE:Factory won't be too broken (if at all...) You don't have very good memory do you? ;-) I answered the exact same question for you, only two weeks ago. http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kde/2008-12/msg00095.html http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kde/2009-01/msg00047.html http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kde/2009-01/msg00056.html http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kde/2009-01/msg00058.html There won't be 4.1.4 packages - but there might be important bugfixes "backported" to 4.1.3. Actually I don't ...
(...) Would you seriously prefer 4.1.4 over 4.2 if you're going to run unsupported packages anyway?
Well, I'd use anything that is in the STABLE tree if it is newer than 4.1.3 ;-) but you're right 4.2 has surely many bug fixes so it might be wiser to use this anyway. Newer does not necessarily mean more unstable ;-) Malte -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
