Hi, I am trying to see how do i upgrade the KDE from current 3.1.1 to 3.1.3. I see that 3.1.3 is the latest on Suse KDE download site. Till Now my Yast Online Update(YOU) didn't tell me anything about this new version of KDE. I am using the download version of Suse 8.2. Would this be the reason why the YOU never told me about the KDE 3.1.3?? If i want to upgrade to 3.1.3 can i just download the files from the Suse KDE site & install them??. Would it install over the existing 3.1.1 ?? Any other pointers regarding this would be appreciated. Thanks Pavan __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! No, this is normal. I never saw a KDE update on YOU except security updates.

This is in short how to upgrade KDE: - - backup your system! - - download all the packages that are installed on your system from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_8.2/* and save all files in one directory. - - to be save I decided to download everything from base, applications and development plus the language dependend file from internationalization (e.g. for German this is kde3-i18n-de-3.1.3-0.noarch.rpm) - - go to runlevel 3, login as root, cd to the directory where you saved all downloaded files and run "rpm -Fvh *.rpm" (without the quotes). This way all installed packages will be refreshed with the new versions. If you get any error messages fix the problems first, then try again ;-) - - as root run /sbin/SuSEconfig - - go back to runlevel 5. Your system should now be running KDE 3.1.3 Ciao, Oliver -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2-rc1-SuSE (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE/RFKs2xKg64Yci0URApbhAKCsFA9sGPFV+vb7YcmIO9kro4rL3wCcDIds pLMk3i0mupnyzRzrbx1puCA= =sdPW -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

OK, I've done everything you have said but have struck a brickwall and don't know how to overcome - especially since it all looks so illogical. During the first installation of the rpms, I got an error message stating that "libwmf-0.2.8-24.i586.rpm did not appear to be a RPM package". All the other rpms installed perfectly. After this I went to have a look at libwmf using Midnight Commander and Yes, mc came back with the message that it could not read the file. So I downloaded another copy of it from the SuSE site and this time I was able to look insided it using mc. Fine, I thought to myself, now I can install it. HA! :-( When I try to install libwmf-0.2.8-24.i586.rpm I now get an error message which states- wv requires libwmf-0.2.so.6 wv requires libwmflite-0.2.so.6 and something else also requires the latter file (...lite...). Now, what has got me absolutely and thoroughly confused is that both of the above files (the so.6) are acutally installed and are sitting in /usr/lib! What is going on, and what needs to be done to overcome this impasse? I don't if this connected to the above but before I updated to KDE 3.1.3 - or, rather, almost updated to it - I had a fully functional TV card (ie, Kwintv was working perfectly) and also in the poker game all cards has backs and fronts which were visible- now the cards are total blanks with nothing on them :-). Anyone have a solution to this problem of mine? Cheers. -- Understanding only begins with the act of perception.

Basil, It turns out the new libwmf rpm SuSE provided for us is bad or at least they didn't settle the dependencies of the other programs that work with the new version. I get the same error, which also includes ImageMagick, so don't force the install, as it will probably break something. Just leave it for the moment, no biggy, and things will come together later. Not sure if the libwmf plays any part in the poker game or not as mine has been broken for a long time. I suspect it is because the game itself has not kept up with KDE. I find some other anomalies as well and am pretty sure QT3 may be part of the answer. Hopefully kpoker will be brought up to date or qt3 will be corrected, whichever it takes. Thanks for the response. I'm keeping an eye out for an update of libwmf. I've had no problems with kpoker until installing KDE313, but this is the least of my troubles. Another has come up today which is bigger and more worrying. Yesterday after I booted up my computer for the first time, after installing the new KDE rpms, I tried to copy a file across from my other drive to the SuSE installation only to get the message that I had no disk space! I checked - df - and found that I had 0 bytes on my main drive. This was not possible. So I deleted all the KDE RPMs I installed (I think they total 226Mb) and only "got back" some 105Kb of space -- another stupidity. I rebooted the whole system and this time df showed that I had 1.7Gb free which is what I expected to see all along. But then Idid something last night which I now may regret. Last night I checked the SuSE site and found that there were new updates to KDE rpms dated 26/8 so I downloaded and installed them. Everything seemed fine for the short period between installing the new RPMs and going to bed. Today I boot my computer and several minutes later I got the BSD! While I was trying to read what the error messages were, the desktop came back but somewhat corrupted. I rebooted and things appeared to be normal until..... In trying to get Kwintv to work I went to the module.conf file in /etc to see what parameters were set for the bttv option. I used CTRL-ALT-F2, logged on root and checked, and altered, the module.conf file for the tuner setting (which was reading -1 for some unknown reason). (I have to add here that I've edited this file in the past many time without problems). After the edit I pressed CTRL-ALT-F7 to get back to the Desktop -- and ended up with a black screen on which tons of lines of scrolling tryint to dump some information from somewhere :-(. I hit the mouse button and the Desktop came up looking as normal as always. I repeated this process (going to F2 and then back to F7) and this time I caught a message stating something about a "kernel something-or-other"; I then pressed the mouse button again and the Desktop came up again. But this time I decided that I had better reply to your message before something else, more drastic, happened. I think I'll re-install SuSE tomorrow, and I will not waste any more time on KDE 313. Cheers. PS Two other things I forgot to mention. The first is that when I installed the first lot of KDE RPMs the settings/operation of my modem were all screwed up and I couldn't connect to the net (I had to rerun the config file for my modem before it would work). And the second is that I now have a screensaver which cuts in after a few minutes and which I cannot get rid of. The screensaver is NOT set in the desktop configuration, but it just keeps coming up. -- Understanding only begins with the act of perception.

[Pruned] A few minutes after I posted my message I solved the problem spoken about above (re the BSOD). Installing the new RPMs somehow set/reset the damn screensaver to not only to be ON but also (?deliberately) selected the BSOD screensaver (which I didn't even know existed) and, of course, it was this which I kept seeing when I returned to the Desktop using ...-F7! What a fright. Thankfully I there is nothing wrong with my heart. Cheers. -- Understanding only begins with the act of perception.

*lmao* Didn't know about that screensaver yet, have to check mine ;-) Glad to here everything you solved that problem. I updated my 8.2 Pro installation to KDE 3.1.3 without problems and also installed the new packages released 08/26 without problems. Well, one small problem: for some reason kdebase3-samba was installed during my initial install, although I didn't install samba-client. The first upgrade to KDE 3.1.3 of kdebase3-samba went without problems, the new version (kdebase3-samba-3.1.3-57.i586.rpm) complained about smbclnt not being installed... Seems they changed the requirements for it. Unfortunately, kdebase3-samba is needed by kdenetwork3-lan, so I had to install samba-client too... I don't use wv, but I noticed that there is a wv2 on the SuSE server which seems to be the successor of wv. There's also a new version of libwmf (0.2.8-24), which you are probably trying to install. So either don't update libwmf (since the old version is required by wv) or uninstall wv, install wv2 and then update libwmf (however, as I don't know wv/wv2, I'm not sure which libwmf version is required by wv2). The libwmf-0.2.8-24.i586.rpm contains libwmf-0.2.so.7 and libwmflite-0.2.so.7, that's the reason for the error message. One thing you can also try is to force the update of libwmf and then create a symbolic link from /usr/lib/libwmf-0.2.so.7 to libwmf-0.2.so.6 (and also for libwmflite) but this is not guaranteed to work.
Now, what has got me absolutely and thoroughly confused is that both of the above files (the so.6) are acutally installed and are sitting in /usr/lib!
Yes, "rpm -Fvh *.rpm" tries to freshen all packages for which it finds newer versions in the current directory. Since you probably have libwmf-0.2.8-24.i586.rpm in your directory rpm finds that updating libwmf will also remove libwmf-0.2.so.6 which will break wv, therefore the error message.

Yes, these are known problems with KDE 3.1.3. I reported the kwintv problem as a bug, but I don't think this will be fixed. If you take a look at www.kwintv.org you will find that kwintv is not supported anymore. The program is completely rewritten and now called QtVision. I switched to xawtv for the moment, since this works fine for me, too. Hello there, try the package of QT-Vision provided at http://packman.links2linux.de/. With my 8.2 it works fine. greetings Michael Eichstädt
[Pruned] THANK YOU for the above! (Sorry for shouting :-).) I installed Qt-Vision and it works marvellously. Great! Thanks again. Cheers. -- Understanding only begins with the act of perception.
Basil Chupin schrieb am Dienstag, 26. August 2003 16:44: Hi Basil
When I try to install libwmf-0.2.8-24.i586.rpm I now get an error message which states-
wv requires libwmf-0.2.so.6 wv requires libwmflite-0.2.so.6
and something else also requires the latter file (...lite...).
Now, what has got me absolutely and thoroughly confused is that both of the above files (the so.6) are acutally installed and are sitting in /usr/lib!
rpm -Fhv wants to deinstall the previous installed versions of libwmf* bevoe installing the new. This package is required by some other packages. I posted a dependecy problem with ImakeMagick some days ago. Simply leave it as it is with the installed libwmf* packages and wait until SuSE provides a proper new version as obviously something is wrong with those packages. cu Stefan

Thanks for the response. I think it is too late for me to wait for libwmf to be fixed- see my reply to Bandi. Installing the latest KDE updated RPMs have destabilised my system which has not happened since I started using Linux 4 years ago. I think I'll reinstall 8.2 tomorrow. Hi all, Did everything as mentioned by Oliver below. But most of my icons are in bad shape. For example, i can't see lots of icons on the Konqueror window. In the filemanagment i don't see any icons for the side bar like history, Home dir etc. but they work when i click em. I don't see the Shell, Shell one tabs in the bottom of the Konsole window. Any idea how i can get these fixed & see if i can get back to the original shape of the Kde 3.1.1. install. Thanks Pavan --- Oliver Schwabedissen <Oliver@Schwabedissen-Online.de> wrote:

I am using the download version of Suse 8.2. Would this be the reason why the YOU never told me about the KDE 3.1.3??
No, this is normal. I never saw a KDE update on YOU except security updates.
If i want to upgrade to 3.1.3 can i just download the files from the Suse KDE site & install them??. Would it install over the existing 3.1.1 ??
This is in short how to upgrade KDE:
- - backup your system!
- - download all the packages that are installed on your system from
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_8.2/*
and save all files in one directory.
- - to be save I decided to download everything from base, applications and development plus the language dependend file from internationalization (e.g. for German this is kde3-i18n-de-3.1.3-0.noarch.rpm)
- - go to runlevel 3, login as root, cd to the directory where you saved all downloaded files and run "rpm -Fvh *.rpm" (without the quotes). This way all installed packages will be refreshed with the new versions. If you get any error messages fix the problems first, then try again ;-)
- - as root run /sbin/SuSEconfig
- - go back to runlevel 5. Your system should now be running KDE 3.1.3
