Re: [opensuse-kde] Action plans for Plasma 5 as default in openSUSE
Can somebody improve on this "installation guide"? https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:KDE_Plasma_5#Installing_Plasma_5_on_openSUSE There needs to be more relevant info on _how_ to install it; does somebody install tumbleweed or do they add the repos here:? https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:KDE_repositories In the second link, it says don't use GDM. Okay, that's nice, what are people supposed to use and how do they change the value? These instructions need to be well written, simple, informative, and understandable by non-developers. That's the thing about Fedora; there's almost perfect documentation that a lot of thought was put into, and with each version the documentation is updated. With openSUSE, it's the exact opposite. The wiki is practically useless; you have to google information to find anything relevant, and when you do, it pertains to a version 3 years old. If you're lucky to find something pertaining to the current version, it's most likely written in broken English and isn't helpful. Are these instructions for installing Plasma5? https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:KDE_Plasma_5#Installing_Plasma_5_on_openSUSE Because that guide is poorly written with poor punctuation and has scattered information all over the place; the entire openSUSE wiki is a major weak spot that needs serious improvements. Why doesn't somebody actually put some useful information in that wiki that actually delivers on its promise?

Hello openSUSE KDE users and contributors,
This mail outlines our plans for moving towards Plasma 5 as a default desktop for the next openSUSE release, includinga tentative action plan and where help from you all is required. We do not believe on pushing changes on users without some sort of preparation, therefore this document describes the transition plan.
See the previous mails for a rationale of this decision.
==== The plan ====
Phase 1: Gather input from the community
In this phase, we would like people from the community, if they are able to, to test the currently-available code. It's quite easy, as all the required software is already available directly in Tumbleweed. You should install Plasma 5 from there (bear in mind that its install will not coexist with the 4.x workspace) and simply try using it.
Is it possible to return to the 4.x workspace? How can kde4 apps work w/o the 4.x workspace?
The following 8 packages are going to be REMOVED: kdebase4-openSUSE 13.2-6.63 kdebase4-session 4.12-5.1 kdebase4-workspace 4.11.16-1.1 kdebase4-workspace-branding-openSUSE 13.2-6.63 patterns-openSUSE-kde 20150105-3.1 patterns-openSUSE-kde4_basis 20150105-3.1 patterns-openSUSE-kde4_imaging 20150105-3.1 plasmoid-cwp 1.12.0-16.2
Interested Tw user.
zypper -v in --recommends plasma5-workspace
That screwed it up, no systemtray, no desktop. And <rt><clicking> on the wallpaper does nothing.
Yeah, you're missing plasma5-session package https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:KDE_Plasma_5#Installing_Plasma_5_on_openSUSE
tks, I'll try again tomorrow or next, have to go out of town for business.

Unfortunately, I started it but I fell short of time. I'll try going back to it next weekend, however in the mean time help is welcome (if anything is unclear, just ask for the informaiton).

Don't forget that the people in the team for openSUSE that handles KDE stuff are all community members: we are *three* people at the moment and we do what we can given our existing commitments. There are many areas where help is welcome, this is one of them. -- Luca Beltrame - KDE Forums team KDE Science supporter GPG key ID: 6E1A4E79
I will try to help out in the guide, but maybe in this wiki: https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:KDE_repositories#KDE_Frameworks_5_.26_Plasma_5 instead of saying "Do not use GDM" there could be a link to here: https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:KDE_Plasma_5 which is a "For Dummies" guide geared towards the lowest common denominator people that explains how to get Plasma 5 installed. I'm even confused if we're supposed to switch to Tumbleweed or if we are supposed to just add the repos, or if either of those options will work. The last time I tried installing Plasma 5 from scratch on a clean install, it installed a bunch of KDE 4.x applications and libraries. For instance, Ktorrent. Has this now changed? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Not all KDE applications have been ported to Frameworks 5. Many of them will still be the KDE4 versions, and co-exist and work fine within Frameworks/Plasma5.

For testing, you can use the repos (they're the devel projects for Tumbleweed), although of course the default only applies for the next openSUSE version. If you are using Tumbleweed of course this is easier as all packages are already there.

This is normal, not all applications are ported, the non ported kdelibs 4.x applications can happily coexist with KF5 based ones. -- Luca Beltrame - KDE Forums team KDE Science supporter GPG key ID: 6E1A4E79
