[opensuse-kde] Cannot "send link" from Firefox under KDE4.7
Please see http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Changing%20the%20e-mail%20program%20used... for the basics & background. I'm talking about the "Send link" option from the _F_ile menu. I've experimented and this doesn't work. What I've done is set up a shell script that uses 'logger' to indicate its been invoked and then execute 'thunderbird', in place of the calls to 'thunderbird' in the instructions of the above. Its clear that this script is NOT getting executed. The script does work, I've used it manually. The path - whatever - from Firefox by whatever internal path is not executing the program filled in. I've tried this with both the Firefox from the openSuSE repository and the one downloaded Mozilla. This is currently FF 6 and TB 6, but I tried upgrading because this problem arose with FF 5 and TB 5 under KDE4.7 -- "Do not be quick to reveal judgement. Hidden judgement often is more potent. Doesn't sound kde related to me. Are you saying it works in non-kde sessions - e.g. icewm? The only thing about kde that might affect FF and TB is the oxygen-gtk gtk style, so maybe try another one. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Yes I'm saying that - Xfce for me

Yup. BTDT. clearlooks, redmond, qtcurve, the xfce styles. In fact "oxygen-gtk" is the only one I haven't tried. As I said, this problem arose when I upgraded to 4.7. What I'm trying to establish is the underlying mechanism TB and FF use to invoke one another. Is it some DBUS thing? As I said, I followed the instruction at http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Changing%20the%20e-mail%20program%20used...
From the FF POV I filled out bother the about:config/mailto and the KDE default mailer with my test script and made sure it was on the $PATH. It does not get executed. Whatever the mechanism FF uses for 'send link' it is not doing what that page implies when it is run under KDE4.7
I've tried rolling back to 4.6 but there is just so much and I've probably missed something critical as I can't get KDE to come up as 4.6. I realise I could start deleting things wholesale but that isn't very scientific or methodological is it? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

That's not the only difference though. Firefox under KDE behaves differently than under other desktops. Still this doesn't explain the described behaviour fully. There are several things to consider and I was going to give FF6 and TB6 a try on a KDE testinstallation soonish. I was planning to answer when I checked if I can reproduce. Firefox under KDE (only the openSUSE version) gets default applications using KDE mechanisms instead of Gnome's GIO. Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

That's interesting for a number of reasons. First, other people have advised me to lock-out the openSUSE version and download directly from Mozilla. I've tried that and it doesn't work either. And as I pointed out on the page I referenced, I have tried the settings in the about:config and in the systemsetting->default browser/mailer. And that's why I didn't jump in earlier. That means the reason is more complicated on your system and I wanted to do some tests before (what I still need to do). I just was pointing out that there is a difference in Firefox when running under KDE. It works here under factory (12.1) and Mozilla Repo for Factory. How I setup thing are like this : first be sure to have in systemsettings under kde4 the default ressource pointed to firefox and thunderbird Default application Then, and this is the most tricky part, get firefox and thunderbird default for gtk env either by using the gnome-control-center, or gconf in the url handler the mailto has to be set to /usr/bin/thunderbird %s -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member & Ambassador GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Yes, I've done all that -- see earlier in the thread. -- He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches.
