[opensuse-kde] Some Thanks And A Few Annoying Pre-Relase KDE Issues
Hi all, I'm really pleased with the way 12.2 has shaped up. Delaying its release in order to put on more polish appears to have been a good move. It's definitely a lot faster and more stable than any previous release I can remember. I find this release particularly important, because with the impending arrival of Windows 8, many tech bloggers are announcing that Microsoft have "abandoned businesses". It is therefore a great opportunity to push openSuSE under the tagline "Built For Business", simply because openSuSE with KDE will be far more familiar to most users than the new Windows 8 interface. To that end, I think it's important to eliminate any user- experience-breaking bugs still remaining prior to release. These seemingly minor cosmetic problems frequently form the crux of the user's opinion of a particular operating system, and encountering very obvious ones (such as 12.1's inability to eject CDs without the tray reclosing) will put them off immediately, regardless of the system's other advantages. I would therefore like to list a few minor, but user-experience- breaking issues that I feel really should be solved prior to final release. 1) Firefox and dolphin launchers cannot be removed from the taskbar. This bug has been solved upstream and I am hoping the fix will be backported. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=757370 2) KDE's clickable user login screen doesn't display the user list correctly at this point. The placement is very strange and off-putting. You can see an image of this here: http://bugzillafiles.novell.org/attachment.cgi?id=498794 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=727821 3) "Do Not Ask Again" check boxes are not respected by KDE. Users will be asked certain questions every time they start an application - incredibly annoying! https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=671578 4) Users cannot edit their KMenu layout without the risk of it becoming corrupted. This bug is most annoying, as it is nearly 5 years old at this point. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=356553 5) It is not possible to use VNC to remotely administer KDE systems at the moment. Remote desktop support is very important in business environments, and is a key feature for tech support. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=771745 6) A user's first login after system boot would always fail. Honestly, typing in your password has not been an issue for the last 20 or more years, so I fail to see why it's acceptable in 2012. This bug was present in 12.2 RC1, but I am not sure about 12.2 RC2. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=728554 That's pretty much it for KDE-specific issues (that I know of) at this time. If these were fixed prior to launch, I think we'd have the best release since I started using SuSE at version 9.0 Malvern. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org
