xfree 4.3 and kde 3.1 / 3.1.1 = font problems / kprinter crash (BUG ?)
Hi, I did upgrade my SuSE 8.1 box to Xfree 4.3 and kde3.1 and now kde 3.1.1, and I did run in a problem (a bug) involving font display and printing, causing koffice to crash when trying to print. After wasting 2 days with it, I give up, either this is a bug or I need good ideas from you guys to show me a solution. I cannot say for sure, when exactly the problem started, but as far as I remember it was after the Xfree 4.3 upgrade, using the provided SuSE 8.1 rpms. There seems to be a problem in the display of fonts, which leads to 1) In ControlCenter/SysAdmin/Font Installer there is no preview of any font anymore. - Either "no preview available" - or it seems to show a preview, but it is not visible, as if it would print white on white (this one is just a little annoying) 2) In konsole - ALL the default fonts are invisible. They are there, but again white on white (Normal, Tiny, ..., huge). - If trying to select a "fixed" font, again, they are not visible. - Other fonts are visible, such as "Lucida console" (this one is also just a little annoying) 3) In kword, kspread, or any program using kprinter, this one crashes when trying to print, but ONLY when certain fonts are in the document. It is crashing no matter if preview or printing. - It works fine with fonts such as helvetica, Arial, Arial unicode MS, Futura Book, Lucida Sans Typewriter, Charter, Utopia, Tahoma etc. - It crashes when using Lucida Sans, Zurich, Verdana, Trebuchet MS, Lucida Fax, Luxi Mono, Angsana New, Book Antiqua etc. , see backtrace attached below. All these fonts did print fine before with kword printing. (this one is quite annoying, I really would like to use koffice) - however if I print a file from openoffice using kprinter and a font, which is crashing kword printing (see above), it prints fine! Is this a kde problem. I think yes and no. ================================ - yes, because xfontsel shows all fonts fine. - yes, because openoffice prints all these fonts with no problem. - no, because openofice also does not display small fonts anymore, if the view (windowsize and zoomfactor) results in the font being somewhat small (but not too smal to display). The test is there, but again "white on white", just not visible. I did reinstall xfree 4.3, qt and kde a couple of times, with no change. I even tried to downgrade to Xfree 4.2, but then kde would not start anymore, it insisted in finding libfontconfig.so.1, which got installed by XFree 4.3 only, and I did not find where there would be a config file to influence this. Anyone has seen this, or is it just me? Or is there a fix for this? Any ideas? Thanks, Matt T. I have tested it out further, it works if you choose "Generic Unix LPD System" instead of CUPS in KPrinter. So use that until KPrinter is fixed for CUPS. But what a pity, I get the same crash everytime. It crashes, no matter if I - print to a ps file - print to a pdf file - select "Generic Unix LPD System" I checked the link you provided at http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-core-devel&m=104816905108215&w=2 and I'm quite sure it is unfortunately not the same problem. Keep in mind that I see these crashes only if I use some fonts, and not with others. Also, the reverse traceback is quite different, mine does not have any KMCupsManager, ...printer... etc. messages, but mentions fontconfig and xft. I think it crashes even before it talks to shatever printing system I want to use. It crashes even at previewing already. I tried to search the bug reports for something like this, however I seem to niot uderstnd the search logic used there. I do not see these crashes on my notebook with XFree 4.3 and kde3.1 (from SuSE's ftp), (also SuSE 8.1). My only workaround now is not to use half on my fonts. What could I try next? Thanks, Matt T.

This is really strange, I tried some of the fonts you have problems with and they work fine for me. (1) Which version of Freetype2 are you using (I am using 2.1.4rc2)? (2) Are you sure the version of QT3 you are using is the one provided by SuSE in the XFree86 4.3 directory? (3) Is QT set to embed fonts? Hi Charles, I did install X4.3 from SuSE, but at that time there was no qt there yet. It was XFree 4.3 from February 28. I installed also the freetype from there. The qt is the one which came with kde 3.1.1 from kde.org. Now that there is a new release of XFree 4.3 (dated March 19) and a qt set on SuSE's ftp I think I should install this and then test again. I should be able to do that by Wednesday (can't do it in a plane yet). I'm quite confident it will help! Thanks a lot, Mat T.

You should. IIRC, according to the SuSE English list, it solves some font problems.

Hi, it took almost a day to download all Xfree 4.3 and qt etc from SuSE's ftp, but now it works fine. I did install first the updated XFree4.3 only, and the problem was still there. Only after installing also the qt3.1.1 which came with it on SuSE's ftp (updating the qt3.1.1 from kde.org installed with kde3.1.1) it works again: - no more crash when printing in kde, from whatever application, using whatever font. - all default fonts are visible again in konsole (small, medium, etc). What is still not working is the font preview in the font installer and the display of small fonts in openoffice, they are still invisible, but I can live with that for now. Again, thanks for all the help! Regards, Matt T.

hi matt
1) In ControlCenter/SysAdmin/Font Installer there is no preview of any font anymore.
same here
- ALL the default fonts are invisible. They are there, but again white on white (Normal, Tiny, ..., huge). - If trying to select a "fixed" font, again, they are not visible. - Other fonts are visible, such as "Lucida console" (this one is also just a little annoying)
same here
3) In kword, kspread, or any program using kprinter, this one crashes when trying to print, but ONLY when certain fonts are in the document. It is crashing no matter if preview or printing.

Have you tried the newer XFree 4.3.0 release yet? There are new ones from March 19th on the ftp mirrors. The Changelog sais that most of the seen problems are fixed there. Don't forget to install the new qt, too. I cannot say for sure if this will really fix your problems, because I build my own xf 4.3.0 from src.rpm on SuSE 7.3. Greets, Daniel Am Sonntag, 23. Sounds great, i will give it a try. I still have the rpms from February 28. It will however be Wednesday before I can do it, I hate to wait so long, but that's life, i have to travel a little.
Don't forget to install the new qt, too.
I did install the qt which came with the kde3.1.1 for SuSE on kde.org. - qt3-3.1.1-57.i586 ( plus all other qt3-*-3.1.1-57.i586 rpms there too)
I cannot say for sure if this will really fix your problems, because I build my own xf 4.3.0 from src.rpm on SuSE 7.3.
If that would fix it, I would do it. Let's try the latest rpms first, it's easier ;-) Thanks, Matt T.

Hi Ben, that is what I tried too, however kde did not want to run without the libfontconfig.* , which got installed by XFree 4.3 I did not find where to tell kde to accept the old XFree 4.2 again, which I had reinstalled from the DVD using YAST. You did not have that problem ( and a solution ) ? Thanks, Matt T.

Just curious, what other problems are you having? I admit that the font display threw me a curve at the beginning, but that didn't take long to solve (upgrading freetype2, QT3 and regenerating the xft cache files). hi ben
It's not KDE it's XFree 4.3 that's your problem most likely. I installed it and had no end of problems. When I fell back to 4.2 then everything worked like normal..even with KDE 3.1.1 :)
i'm happy again. the latest xfree 4.03 solved the problems. who said kde 3.1.1 sucks? me? naaaaaaaaaaa :-) even the konqueror-super-user-bug has been fixed meanwhile - great... michael -- Michael Kaiser http://www.kaiser-detmold.de
