[opensuse-kde] Remove/hide the Desktop Toolbox aka Cashew?
I'm constantly being hounded by everyone I help install openSUSE... they all.. 100%... hate the Desktop Toolbox (aka Cashew) and want it removed. In another era (around openSUSE 11.0 timeframe) I was able to put ShowDesktopToolbox=false in one of the the ~/.kde4/share/config rc files and restart Plasma... and it'd be gone. That doesn't seem to work anymore (at least not when I try to add it to plasma-desktop-appletsrc). There have been loads of KDE.org bugs opened requesting a config option to hide or remove the Desktop Toolbox (Cashew), and they've all been closed as WONTFIX by Aaron (dev over at KDE... he absolutely refuses to consider the requests and gets VERY grumpy when anyone asks about it) Stealth Cashew seems to be available by default in 12.1 (or did I install it and forget?), but it fails with a ruby-script error. (as an aside: If it is there by default, why aren't the the bits needed to run it also installed?) I managed to sort out the missing bits so that Ruby based Plasmoids will run... I launched the Stealth Cashew widget, set the sliders to completely transparent... and nothing, it didn't work. I dug around and found Py-Cashew on KDE-Look.org. After installing it, it fails with a "Could not create a python ScriptEngine for the Py-Cashew widget" error. i tried all the usual tricks like installing python-devel to try and get it working, but nothing.. it simply fails. So.. what options are left here... I've got people asking me why they can't remove it, and really pestering me to get rid of it... and so far I've got nothing. Does anyone have any suggestions? I agree. The damn thing is annoying. I have perfectly clean desktops but have to put up with this wart on otherwise perfect-looking 6 wallpapers. There is the option in the Shortcuts in this "nut" to "Remove this Widget" which is done with ALT+D,R . I haven't tried it yet (don't want to break something that ain't broke), and I don't know which Widget will get removed. One trick is to drag the cashew behind your panel. Of course this is only a viable option if you panel is non-transparent. (credit goes to coolo for the trick). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Yah, for me, it's behind another widget, and the only way I even remember it's there is when I mistakenly click or hover the cursor too long in that corner. I'm not too bothered by it myself... I never use it, but I can easily ignore it. I really don't understand though why the KDE guy are so dead set against allowing users to hide or remove it. Everything else is configurable in KDE.. yet that seems like a Holy Object Not To Be Touched. go to http://goo.gl/zC4c1 Look for the right version in the Download column (Since I am using 64 bit version and kde 4.8 I used fc17.x86_64.rpm) Open konsole and download it with wget Extract rpm: rpm2cpio kde-plasma-ihatethecashew-*.rpm | cpio -idmv copy files to usr sudo cp -r usr/* /usr/ Click on add widget and select i HATE the cashew Done. -- gpe -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

That widget did the trick. I forgot to search user build service directories when I was poking at the repos... turns out there are several builds of this widget in the build service. I explained how to find the 1-Click installs fro the IHateTheCashew to my friends and now they are happy.. no more Cashew and they can stop fuming about it :-) ha. Thanks for the above but unfortunately it does not work for me (using a 32-bit system with KDE 4.8). The i686 file I downloaded does not get rid of the cashew even though the ihatethecashew widget is in place :-( . Many thanks for this. I didn't know that this page existed. It is now bookmarked for future reference. I just added this repository to Yast and installed the package. It works! http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/brunciter/openSUSE_12.1/ -- Cheers! OK, here's the rub :-) . I downloaded and installed the ihatethecashew rpm from http://goo/gl/zC4c1 but it wouldn't work for me. Until in one of my fiddling-with-it attempts I struck gold! :-) . Reason for it "not working"? Well, I have 6 desktops, each set up to have its own set of widgets. The ihatethecashew widget has to be applied to each and everyone INDIVIDUALLY to get rid of the cashew on each workspace. How to do this? Install the 'hate' rpm (as per instructions). Go to one of the desktops and activate this widget by adding it to the widgets: unlock widgets, click on the cashew you see at the far right end of the taskbar, add weidgets, type in the Find box [left side] 'i hate' and the widget will appear under this box, 2X click on it and it will get a tick to indicate that it is selected; NOW, left-click and hold drag this widget to the Desktop and release -- the Cashew on the Desktop disappears! :-) . Go to all your other Desktops and do the last part again for each one: find the hate widget, drag it to the desktop.......
