Running 9.0. After upgrading to KDE 3.2 on two systems, I have some problems that I just can't resolve. I did not remove kdebase3-SuSE on either system. One system works fine (my test system of course) and my main system is the one with problems. I had none of the following problems under 3.1.4. 1) Firefox keeps freezing, leaving zombie or dead processes resulting in blank windows on the desktop. 2) Sound no longer works 3) Local Network browsing no longer works (SMB) 4) Printing sometimes freezes the entire system 5) The system is basically unstable Anyone else have these problems and resolved them? Although I really don't want to, to go back to KDE 3.1.4, do I have to remove 3.2 (via YaST? and from a different window manager like FVWM) and then re-install 3.1.4 from the CD's? Anything else I have to do like removing profiles or ? Thanks- Dan

Were you using 3.2 or 3.2.1 ? I get the impression it was 3.2 and that level contained a number of bugs (sound!) which were subsequently fixed. If you really want to go back, directory .kde in your home directory is liable to cause some grief. I would: - download the complete 3.1.5 packages - go into a different windowmanager and call yast or go into text-mode and do it from there - delete all of the packages associated with 3.2 (including arts, quanta, qt3 and I think libart_lgpl, libxml2, libxslt, taglib (??) along with the koffice stuff if you installed it) - rename .kde as .kde-3.2 or something - delete the obvious temp files in /tmp - install the 3.1.5 stuff, or the stuff from the CD Did I forget anything? -- opinions personal, facts suspect. http://home.arcor.de/36bit/samba.html

Actually, I'm currently at 3.2.1-xx, however I did start out at 3.2 and did updates to 3.2.1-xx as they became available. Maybe the cause of the instability?? If sound was fixed in 3.2.1, I haven't seen it working. Thanks- Dan
I agree. If sound was fixed somewhere, I haven't seen/heard it. I'm running SuSE Pro 9 with kde 3.2.1 and sound does not work. In fact, sound hasn't worked since kde 3.1.4. I've followed all the threads related to sound on this list since kde 3.2 was first released. Still no sound. <sigh> Intel i8x0 From YaST2 Modules > Sound configuration Number --> [0] Card model --> 82801DB AC'97 Audio Controller State --> Running Chris Shanahan On Wednesday 17 March 2004 16:49, Dan Weisenstein wrote:

Have you guys updated alsa? What version are you running now? I have a version from the Packman site, but there is a newer version available from Kraxel also, the guy doing the 2.6.x kernels. You might try that before giving up on 3.2.1 kde. Lee -- --- KMail v1.6.1 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.0 --- Registered Linux User #225206 On any other day, that might seem strange...

Two very useful features in previous versions of konqueror were "copy to" and "move to" accessible from the menu following a right click when in file management mode. I'm using KDE 3.2.1 and these features are no longer available. This is a great shame as they gave konqueror a big edge on windows explorer. Why have they been removed or is there a setting to reactivate them? Cheers John

Is it possible to reinstall kdebase3 without first uninstalling it? If I uninstall it then many other KDE programs will also be uninstalled and probably then a complete reinstallation of KDE 3..2.1will be required. Any ideas on how to avoid this? John AFAIK you can "reinstall" without uninstalling first as the rpm command has a freshen option which updates an existing package. There should not be any broken dependencies since kdebase3 will always exist. You may, however, wish to have this confirmed by a more experienced user than I before going ahead. Perhaps one of them will (dis)agree with me. Then again, you may decide to throw caution..... Jim
Jim I've taken a look at what you suggested. It seems that even with the -F (freshen option) one still needs to be freshening with a later version than the one installed. It does not seem possible to reinstall a package while it is currently installed.... but perhaps I'm missing something. John On Friday 19 March 2004 17:51, Jim MacLeod wrote:

Ok, I rolled back to 3.1.4 after 5 crashes/freezes today. All ok, EXCEPT that yast2 now only runs in curses mode (in a terminal window). How can I get yast to go back to GUI mode?? Dan

I guess you would have to install the package yast-qt... If you do that with YaST, all packages that it depends on will automatically installed too. Cheers, Leen

I wasted a lot of time trying to get 3.2 working and gave up on it -- too many things didn't work right. I've reverted to 3.1.4 and not regretted it. When the kinks in 3.2 are really ironed out (3.2.2, maybe?) I'll switch to it. Paul Abrahams
