I have a simple question, to which I could not find any answer in Suse documents, either paper, or online. Any way here is the question: how do I switch from one desktop to another? I was very unhappy with the Suse User Guide which talks about Kde and Gnome both for 20 pages, but it never tells you how to switch from one to another. First and foremost I want to know how to switch the default desktop environment to Gnome, which some users prefer. I personally would like to use both, and switch between them at will, if this is possible. Two other users want the Enlightenment Desktop. I could download that and install it, but I just don't know how to switch between desktops, and one additional desktop will only make my problem worse. If you can help, I would be very grateful. Best regards to all, -sinan

On my suse8.2 KDM (the login screen) has a dropdown with a session type entry. In here you should find gnome if it is installed. On Saturday 12 June 2004 04:35, sinan kaptanoglu wrote:

Best regards to all,
When you are at the login screen there is an option for session, this is a clickable button which gives you the option to choose which desktop environment that you prefer. I've noticed that it's default behaviour (8.2 and 9.0) is to login to the previous session type, ie. gnome or kde. Hope that helps, Mike

Maybe you configured SuSE to automatically log in. Meaning that your user-id gets loaded without you needing to type in your password. In that case the login-screen will not be shown. To return (from the started KDE) to that login-screen you have to log out (no shutdown!). Now kdm will ask which user to log in on which desktop manager, just as described by Mike. <ctrl><[F1|Fn]> (n being the total number of desktops available) or (for kde) put the pager applet on the kicker-bar and mouse click on the desired desktop.

first instance above. I do not know about the second.

AFAIK, the '<ctrl><Fn> works in all window managers. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos

For myself I use my first wheel when the mouse is over the desktop area of the speed bar. Likely there is a manual method as well. It also works with the second wheel. CWSIV

click on the menu button in the lower right of the login screen. Using that, each user can set their preferred desktop. In yast control center->system->/etc/sysconfig editor, you can change the default wm, or just edit /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager HTH -Eric
