[opensuse-kde] Can hardly use any kwin effect with KDE 4.6.0
Hi there, I run KDE 4.6.0 on a 2.2 Ghz dual core and nVidia 210mobile, so enough power is no issue. But, i can hardly use any effects. When I use the 3D cube or even only the application switcher, kwin immediately turns off compositing, saying the effects were too slow. Strange, I can very well use Compiz with all effects! Compiz runs fast and smooth, only kwin makes trouble. So I guess there is a kwin issue here. Is there any workaround? Because I would prefer kwin over Compiz, if it only worked.... I enabled Vsync, both in the nVidia drivers and KDE compositing settings and it seems to help, no crash so far, no hang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

No, I was wrong. It hung again, did not help. Back to Compiz.... and kwin does not remember window postions, even when they are given fixed for a certain window. Am I wrong or is kwin in 4.6.0 pretty broken? Malte -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Are you using up to date drivers for your video card? You need 3D capable drivers for some KWin effects. I'm actually an AMD user, but I know from experience that without good drivers you don't get the visual effects that KWin provides. I prefer the closed source drivers when it comes to this, unfortunately because manufacturers tend to know most about how to utilize their own works of art. So try the propriety NVIDIA driver or Nouveau if you want open source drivers.

Of course, I use the nVidia drivers from nVidia, there is no other way to get 3D than using their proprietary drivers. Malte -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

What openSUSE version (11.3?), and more importantly, what kernel version, and what nVidia driver version? It may be possible that you're running into one of the nVidia/kernel combinations that cause problems with KDE4. For example, the default kernel for 11.3 is well known to cause significant performance issues on (most, but not all) computers that are using nvidia graphics cards. The quick fix in these cases was to simply upgrade to a newer kernel (eg install a kernel from the Kernel:Head repository). Of course it could be something else as well... but this is the firs place I would look. Disabling the blur effect might also help. Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

I heard this before. But I just like the blurred title bar, so for now I will stick with Compiz, it runs rock solid. Malte -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Has anyone managed to get Compiz working successfully on KDE4? I've tried several times, only to fail. Yast shows you the packages you need when you look for "compiz". They have a wiki and a forum: http://wiki.compiz.org/ http://forum.compiz.org/ hth Malte -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Disabling blur did not help. But I have found now two things that have helped so far (still testing): In KDE 4.6 Open GL mode use "shared memory" (i dont know the proper English naming there, I use the German UI). For nVidia use the X.org composite wrapper, add to xorg.conf Opion "UseCompositeWrapper" "true" For the last minutes this has helped, no hang any more after using the cube and blur is enabled. So, maybe this is the solution. Malte -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Ok, here is the solution that now *really* helped, I got the nVidia driver release 260.19.36 which is available on nvidia.com and not nvidia.de. After a little stress test no hang anylonger.
