[opensuse-kde] OS 13.2 Dophin preview/info media files
HI guys, on my os 13,2 with dolphin 15.04 when I over or select a media file, in the info panel there is a sort of mini player but the play button does nothing... Tested with wav, flac, mp3, mpeg, avi. Is there something missing ? Can you play them in Dragonplayer? You need to have the appropriate codecs installed. Depending on which Phonon backend you use, this would either be a gstreamer- plugins package or vlc-codecs. Both would also need an uncrippled ffmpeg/libav*. If you are using gstreamer, make sure all packages have the same versions. I'd recommend to do a full switch to the Packman repo to make sure everything is aligned, and it should work. I just tried a random AVI file here (MP3/Xvid), and it played fine using phonon-backend-vlc, but I do remember having it working with phonon-backend- gstreamer in the past too. Can you play them in Dragonplayer? I don't have Dragonplayer installed but no issue at all with vlc or audacity. I have ffmpeg with alla codecs (and additional media libs from packman), gstreamer-backend.

I have gstreamer-0.10 and gstreamer-1.8 installed both with plugin bad and ugly. I need support for audio files at least.. Daniele -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

But VLC and Audacity do *not* use Phonon (nor gstreamer). The point was to test whether playing back those files works with Phonon in general on your system or not.

gstreamer-0_10 is irrelevant here, as phonon-backend-gstreamer uses 1.x. You should also install gstreamer-plugins-bad-orig-addons, gstreamer-ugly- orig-addons. The normal bad and ugly packages do not contain non-free codecs. gstreamer-plugins-libav would likely also be a good choice, as that supports practically all codecs (via ffmpeg). Though at least mp3 and wav should work on a default installation, check that you also have gstreamer-fluendo-mp3 and gstreamer-plugins-good and -base. And again, check that all gstreamer 1.x package are the same version. If you have a mixture of e.g. 1.4 (from the standard repo) and 1.8, this won't work. Deleting the plugins cache (~/.cache/gstreamer-1.0/) may help if the necessary plugins are installed but are not found. You could of course also try phonon-backend-vlc instead, as VLC is apparently working fine on your system. I just now tried an MP3 and that works as well. Daniele. Daniele,
Using the gstreamer backend with 13.2 disables the sound in Amarok. Hence the the recommendation on instlling the phonon-backend-vlc and removing the gstreamer backend. Thanks but no Amarok here. With vlc-backend under sound configuration there are more options: poulse, alsa+pulse, default and jack. With gstreamer only default ! Now I'm fighthing with recorditnow but this is another story.. Daniele. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, that's true. Regarding your wondering why you switched to gstreamer: phonon-backend-vlc is not installed by default. And the version shipped in 13.2 broke when Packman upgraded VLC to 2.2 (if you used Packman's vlc), it even caused crashes. Maybe that's why you uninstalled it? ;-) This works again now because Packman offers phonon-backend-vlc too meanwhile, built against their vlc. (the one in 13.2 needs vlc 2.1.x, because that's the vlc version included in 13.2) Kind Regards, Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Sorry, but that's nonsense. Sound in Amarok works fine with the gstreamer backend. It even has some advantages, e.g. the Analyzer only works with gstreamer (and fading too I think). You need to have the corresponding gstreamer plugins installed though, depending on what type of files you want to play, just as you need vlc-codecs to be able to play non-free codecs with the vlc backend. And all gstreamer packages should have the same version. Packman offers a newer gstreamer as is shipped in openSUSE 13.2, if you have a mixture of packages between the two, things will break. Also, you don't need to remove the gstreamer backend when installing the vlc backend. phonon-backend-vlc is preferred automatically when installed, and you can also explicitly choose the one you want to use in KDE's settings.
