[opensuse-kde] About: migrating from Kontact/Kmail4 to version 5

I did what I did write in the title. Since this has been the only time I had to revert an upgrade due to usability, I think I share this here. a) If you use a usb-based or smartcard based token for your wallet: don't migrate yet. You will get into the kwallet-hell with migration running no matter what (yes, even the already migrated trick in the kwalletrc does not help). b) there are several bugs that make kmail actually unusable - kmail crashes silently with segfault on a i915 based system. I think this is more a Leap problem but as I cannot know, I did report it upstream. There are two possibilities: will come back or will be answered in a few years so stand by. - the filter functions (filter vanishing due to some race condition, bug reported since 3 years or so) does NOT get better, so no need to upgrade yet. - the folder function with pop does not work as expected. If you have several folder, with sub-folders: if you filter filters the message, the message will stay signed correctly as new, but the sub-folder itself will not show any new mail. If you will go into that folder and read one of these new messages it will show up and all the others two. So if you have 30 new, nothing is shown. If you read one, you are shown suddenly to have 29 messages left unread. This is true also for the symbol in the tray and makes the program for me unusable. Messages deliverd to the main folder are shown correctly as present instead and are also seen by the tray. After a shutdown and a restart, the up to that moment already present messages are shown now as new, while new ones coming in are not shown. You can imagine the impact on day by day usability. I did no report this as I think such a macroscopic issue cannot be unknown. So I will suppose it has been resolved upstream. - Imap works as expected (although i am not using sub-folders for IMAP and therefore the latter bug may be present as well. However the client crashes the same. - during install of the kde5 version there is no pattern, so if you are left without half of your beloved programs (kjots etc) you will have to search for them and install them one by one. I think these things will be solved upstream or are solved upstream, but since some user here reported "no particular quirks" apart of Kolab not working, I thought at least to share. For me currently (with kgpg, gpa, kleopatra not having been migrated (I think Kleopatra now with the latest SC) there is no indication to change to version 5 on Leap. YMMV of course. --- Mail & Cloud Made in Germany mit 3 GB Speicher! https://email.freenet.de/mail/Uebersicht?epid=e9900000450 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Kontact5 crashes regularly here, the bug reports are often years old.

Also, korganizer is quite buggy. In particular, I cannot set the time of new events properly, and remote ICS resources do not work at all. I'm still using the old version to avoid many problems with the new one. -- Regards, Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

I have i915 system and I do not experience such problem.

I use filters only on server and check mail with IMAP. The server supports SIEVE and it also just works. No problem.
- the folder function with pop does not work as expected. If you have several folder, with sub-folders: if you filter filters the message, the message will stay signed correctly as new, but the sub-folder itself will not show any new mail. Weird problem. I do not have this problem. All (sub)folders correctly show number of unreaded messages instantly.
I did no report this as I think such a macroscopic issue cannot be unknown. So I will suppose it has been resolved upstream.

This is just packaging issue and could/should be reported to openSUSE bugzilla.
