[opensuse-kde] Changing date/time format?
How do I make all dates and times /in KDE/ to be shown in the following format if the 'date' command returns "Mon Nov 23 21:53:13 EST 2015": Date: "2015-11-23" Time (no AM/PM): "21:51" I am in the United States but prefer the formats above. Under KDE4 with another distro I figured this out, but can't find it in OpenSUSE's KDE4. Yes, I also know that KDE5 does NOT support customization of formats, which is one of MANY reasons I switched to OpenSUSE. AFAICT, no one can do what you (and I) want, just one of many reasons KDE4 should have remained supported upstream (and in openSUSE) until at least two more years' worth of releases of KDE5 beyond the termination that already took place last summer. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=340982 -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Date/time format can be changed (in KDE4) by opening Desktop Configuration (from start menu) > Common Appearance & Behaviour > Locale > Country/Region & Language > Date & Time. Click on the Help button and you should be able to figure out the changes necessary. Long date format would be similar to: "SHORTWEEKDAY, DD SHORTMONTH YYYY". DUH? Then there's something wrong with my system since that's what I have. I wonder how THAT happened? In v5? I had a brain fart. Careful reading of both what I wrote, and more importantly, the URL provided, should have made evident what I wrote applied to v5, not as the OP asked to KDE4. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." In KDE5 there is no way to format the date/time, you can only pick the country. On 11/24/15 00:44, Anton Aylward wrote:

So? What's your problem? Define a new 'country', call it perhaps "en_myversion". Set it with the values you want & compile it. See appropriate man pages. If you don't want to do that, then you can define the values on the book command line. RTFM locale.conf(5) Alternatively you could have an entry in the system wide file /etc/locale.conf for LC_TIME If it comes down to that, you could arrange that KDE start from a script where LC_TIME has been set. These options set LC_TIME *only* so you just find a "country" that has the time values you want and use that , you don't have to adopt *every* locale value of that country, -- Every civilization that has ever existed has ultimately collapsed. -- Henry Kissinger -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org
In KDE4 it just worked fine! You could format it like using the date command. Further even though I cannot select 24 hour time, or format my date, my week starts on a monday(!) it should start on a sunday. In KDE4 I wouldn't get desktop seg faults all the time. In KDE4 I my system tray would not be broken (xembed). This is why I am sticking with KDE4. On 11/24/15 12:11, Anton Aylward wrote:

I would encorage you to file bugs against problems you find in Plasma 5 (even if by testing it from time to time). Keeping with Plasma 4.x on the long run will not be sustainable for a number of reasons: - openSUSE 13.2 will go EOL sooner or later; - The Qt 4.x toolkit, which is the base for kdelibs 4.x and all the 4.x applications, will also go EOL by the end of the year; - Upstream KDE has ceased support and development of Plasma 4.x. At least IMO, if anyone wants to keep 4.x running, you're welcome to do so, no one will stop you. However, it will not be supported by the team and it'll likely not to get back in the main distro repos. -- Luca Beltrame - KDE Forums team KDE Science supporter GPG key ID: A29D259B

Just to clarify: 1. the 'date' command, like the 'ls; command, are not part of KDE See the respective man pages for how to alter their formatting See also the environment setting for LOCALE set in your shell startup try 'date -I' 2. yes this is broken in "KDE5" but not in KDE4. -- Try to learn something about everything and everything about something.
