[opensuse-kde] Audio volume OSD is kinda broken.
After the last update the audio volume OSD doesn't work properly for me anymore. Only the kmix adjuster reacts to my keyboard volume wheel. But when I logout and re-login then the OSD is back to normal. I'm little bit tired of having to re-login after every single boot. Is there any permanent fix to this? Any help is much appreciated. We need more invofmzgion - (that's what happens if you type "information" with your hands in the wrong place): What KDE version? - 3.5.7 (openSUSE 10.3 default + updates) - 3.5.9 (KDE:KDE3 buildservice) - 4.0.2 (KDE:KDE4:STABLE:* buildservice or 11.0 Factory/alpha) - 4.0.66 (KDE:KDE4:UNSTABLE:* buildservice) By OSD do you mean that the OSD doesn't respond to your keyboard's multimedia keys (or other shortcuts)? By OSD do you mean that the OSD doesn't respond to your keyboard's multimedia keys (or other shortcuts)?
Positive. I meant my keyboard's multimedia keys. Well it usually does respond but I have logout to kdm and login again into kde in order to make it appear. Yes it is reproducible. Every time I boot the machine. 1. Booting 2. Loging into KDE by the means of KDM. 3. Audio Volume OSD do not react to the keyboard's multimedia keys or wheels I have. Only the kmix adjuster reacts to the keys (Der kleine Balken für den Hauptkanal am Kmixer) 4. Loging out of kde into KDM 5. Loging in again into KDE 5. Audio Volume OSD works 6. Rebooting the machine 7. Loging into KDE 8. Audio Volume OSD does not work 9. Loging out etc 10 and so on. If I recollect it correctly, you've had patched the kdeaccessibility3 package previously as I had similar problems some time ago. But back there with the next update the issue of not working Audio Volume OSD came back and doesn't work correctly since. There is also an issue of not having the mute option on the main channel of kmix (pcm channel has the option), but I will make a separate thread for that issue. So it does work like planned.
5. Audio Volume OSD works
I'm not sure which OSD you're talking about here. do you mean the kmilo one? do you mean the one that comes from some laptop ACPI bios? Are those buttons you press standard multimedia keys or are they some laptop vendor specific keys that raise/lower mixer volume by hardware interference? I assume that if you don't want the kmix popup but the kmilo one, then we have to make sure that the right app uses the global keyboard shortcut. does it work, when it broke for you, after executing ths command sequence: killall kded killall kmix kded dcop kded kded loadedModules | grep kmilo ?

is that because your sound card doesn't have a mute on the main channel (some newer cards have that issue, they only have mute on the headphone or the speaker output, not on the "emulated" master channel)? Thats an open, and known problem then. Now that you've told me the name of the plugin I've googled for it, and you are correct. I wish to get kmilo working. I became somehow addicted to it. The multimedia key response w/o kmilo looks like this: http://www.aedon.eu/test/no_osd.png The desired response with kmilo looks like this: http://www.aedon.eu/test/desired_osd.png
then we have to make sure that the right app uses the global keyboard shortcut.

okay. there is a race on startup, so whatever starts up first will win. we don' really want to support kmilo, because it introduces a heap of other issues. what you're asking for is therefore that the OSD is moved to mix and added there by default. can you file that as a bugreport please so that it is not forgotten? I think that can be done, but I'll have to find time for it.

currently only by starting kmix after kded.

Not really, the bug should be a generic hardware "feature".

Is there any way *for me now* to remove kmix from dcop / automatic start? Deactivating "autostart after login" in kmix/settings has no impact.

I'm referring to the device description provided by gnome-volume-control (while on pop-up menu: file/choose device/device description). gnome-volume-control provides fully functional mute for the master channel of my sound card. That's why I felt free to assume a bug in KDE. Thanks for your time spent on this! Cheers Pete -- All the best, Peter J. Because i always switch KDE to open clean (not saving the session) kmix never opens for me. I always have to add it to the Autostart folder, just like klipper. I've closed kmix and switched kde session recovery to user-saved mode. Then saved the session manually and rebooted. Seems to work now. Thanx Peter for the work-around! - -- All the best, Peter J. Just for the record the current kdeaccessibility3-3.5.9-12.6 still doesn't provide a reliable audio volume OSD. Neither for an existing KDE user nor for a fresh one. Am I missing something? What does kdeaccessibility3 have to do with OSD?
Well I wasn't quite sure, but I thought to remember the kdeaccessibility3 fixing the problem, as Dirk seems already fixed it for us on KDE 3.5.8. Apparently I was wrong about kdeaccessibility3 . Could you please be so kind and specify what package is responsible for that audio volume OSD behavior or if you like a lack of it? http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kde/2008-01/msg00014.html
And could you answer Dirk's questions?
I did already, but only to the list. No private copy. I still don't know if a private copy is appreciated by the devs?! http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kde/2008-03/msg00130.html Thus I summarize: Yes it is reproducible. When I boot up and login into gnome for a one user then logout and login into kde but for for a different user, the Audio Volume OSD wont appear. Thus I conclude, that I have to be at least one time in kde and relogin to make Audio Volume OSD appear. Btw, AFAIK it can't be a non-standard user settings issue, because a new created user account shows exactly the same problems. A user switch within kde itself, however, force the OSD to appear. My system is: openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 KDE:KDE3 buildservice Both fully updated as of current release on ftp.gwdg.de. ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_10.3/ The latest release of KDE 3.5.8 plus *the one* package patched by Dirk worked out for me. The next update provided KDE 3.5.9 was broken again and the following updates also provided no solution to the OSD problem. If further information needed, I'll be glad to provide it. And could you answer Dirk's questions?
I did already, but only to the list. No private copy. I still don't know if a private copy is appreciated by the devs?!
Sorry, I overlooked your first reply to that. Will -- Desktop Engineer KDE Team --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
