[opensuse-kde] Changes to the KDE Repositories
The last few weeks there was a discussion on the mailinglist with regards to the existance of KDE:Distro:Stable and it's function. During the last KDE team meeting (last week Wednesday), this topic was discussed and the following was agreed: 1) If the maintenance team agrees, then we will provide minor updates (e.g. 4.9.x releases) through the normal update channel for the openSUSE releases. The repository from where these updates are delivered is the corresponding KDE:Release:xy repo. 2) If the maintenance team agrees to point 1, then the repository KDE:Distro:Stable no longer has a function nor reason to keept it. Therefore this repository will be deleted. 3) The remaining repositories (KRxy, KDF and KUSC) will be build against lesser openSUSE targets. This to reduce the load on OBS and also due to required changes it is sometimes impossible to keep a newer release building on an older release. The target is to support a maximum of 2 openSUSE releases (current and current-1). For KDF and KUSC this would mean to support Factory and the current release). This leads to the following: KDE:Release:46 Build for openSUSE 11.4 KDE:Release:47 Build for openSUSE 12.1 and openSUSE 11.4 KDE:Release:48 Build for openSUSE 12.2 and openSUSE 12.1 KDE:Releaes:49 Build for openSUSE 12.2 and openSUSE 12.1 KDE:Distro:Factory Build for Factory and openSUSE 12.2 KDE:Unstable:SC Build for Factory and openSUSE 12.2 This coming Tuesday the above schedule will be activated. At first we will disable the build for the "to-be dropped" targets and about 1 week later we will delete the targets from the above repositories. Currently builds in KDE:Release:49 and KDE:Distro:Factory have been disabled as that we are preparing for the upcoming KDE 4.9.2 release. This repo is not hurting anyone if it exists for another year or even longer. The only thing I would do disable building and place README file that will tell: * that repo is disabled because there is no need for it * estimated time to be deleted, if space is so precious, and * explanation what is new solution with easy links, * instruction how to remove this repo from package management. This will save us a lot of explanations and help helpers to explain a problem on IRC, ML and Forums. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Outdated and unmaintained packages are not really something to strive after.

Are you sure people look into the repo for a README file, even in case it fails? I'd say a blog on planetsuse, a post in the forums and mailinglist and be done with it. No, but if it moves to regular update channel, then KDS state will be irrelevant, which actually means URL can be kept just as place for README. It would be ideal if one can put in .repo file mentioned README and yast or zypper printing that out on next refresh, disable repo and offer removal. ...

In that cases helpers on IRC/ML/F will know and clear the mess, as they do now. Unlike plain users those helpers have habit of investigating URL and will spot README.

Problem with articles placed away from software repos is that even when you know they exist it is not simple to find them and reference to user. A bit unclean directory structure on download.o.o is small price to all work that has to be done if README is missing.

OK, nice Will Packman work with that move?
actually, this point was a bit misleading: We'd like to ship minor updates to the KDE version the openSUSE release included. That means, openSUSE 12.2 will not get KDE4.9.x via an update (it was released with 4.8.4 and got an update to 4.8.5 already - the last one in the 4.8.x cycle) 12.3 can benefit from this change though... So, nothing to fear using packman repo right now :) Nico -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Overall I think the suggestion is good, but I have two potential issues: 1. what is the plan for openSUSE 11.4? Are we going to drop support for it at EOL? 2. Do the older repos really need to be enabled, or can they just be built once and then disabled? I mean, specifically: KDE:Release:46 openSUSE 11.4 KDE:Release:47 openSUSE 11.4 KDE:Release:47 openSUSE 12.1 KDE:Release:48 openSUSE 12.1 If they are not being built against the update repo, then these should never change, right? -Todd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

maybe for the old repos, the links for libqt4 etc should be fixed as well, I think currently, all KDE:* repos rebuild as soon as someone changes something in the Qt packages - I'm not sure whether you can fix an aggregate to a certain revision though... Alternatively replace the aggregate with a fixed links for these repos as this would significantly reduce OBS work!
