No more GNOME after updating to KDE 3.4 in KDM
Hello List, I got a little Prob with KDM after Updating to 3.4. KDM is not giving me the option to start GNOME anymore. I got GNOME 2.8 from ULB installed, but it is not shown up in the PopUp Selection. If I use GDM both are shown up, KDE and GNOME (and others) like before, and i can login to both. Any Idee what i could modify to get back Gnome in KDM ? Thanks Micha

Check if "gnome-session" is in your PATH, or check the "Exec" and "TryExec" entries in /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop, if they are pointing to your "gnome-session" script. Mario

Hi Mario, i'm sorry, but i really can't see what you mean. The /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop is a bin , shell i open a bin ? or do you mean the Properties ? It's not a executable bin, but the kde.desktop too . And how does it shall Point to a script, it's not a link. And a gnome-session script ? Can not find one... But, as i said, i can load Gnome with GDM , but with KDM not Micha

Hi Mario,

What do you mean with a "bin"? Here /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop is a plain text file: $ file /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop: UTF-8 Unicode text $ ll /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5817 Aug 5 2004 /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop $ head -6 /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Type=XSession Exec=gnome-session TryExec=gnome-session Name=GNOME $
And a gnome-session script ? Can not find one...
$ which gnome-session /opt/gnome2/bin/gnome-session The "Exec" and "TryExec" lines in gnome.desktop must point to gnome-session, so either you have /opt/gnome2/bin (or your <gnome-install-dir>/bin) in $PATH or you must enter <gnome-install-dir>/bin/gnome-session there. Mario

It has the symbol of a bin, like all others in this Directory And i can not open it, no option for
Here /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop is a plain text file:
$ file /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop: UTF-8 Unicode
$ file /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop: ASCII text
text $ ll /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5817 Aug 5 2004 /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop

$ head -6 /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Type=XSession Exec=gnome-session TryExec=gnome-session Name=GNOME $

And a gnome-session script ? Can not find one...
$ which gnome-session /opt/gnome2/bin/gnome-session
which gnome-session /opt/gnome/bin/gnome-session file /opt/gnome/bin/gnome-session /opt/gnome/bin/gnome-session: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.2.5, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), not stripped Even not a script, it's a bin ( or executable )
The "Exec" and "TryExec" lines in gnome.desktop must point to gnome-session, so either you have /opt/gnome2/bin (or your <gnome-install-dir>/bin) in $PATH or you must enter <gnome-install-dir>/bin/gnome-session there.

Sorry List, but i have to answer in german ... Ich kann an der gnome.desktop nichts ändern weil ich es nicht öffnen kann. Ich sag doch, es handelt sich nicht um ein script sondern um eine executable ( so eine mit nem Zahnradsymbol ;-) ) Micha

It is a text file:
$ file /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions/gnome.desktop: ASCII text
So you can modify it with any text editor, as long as you're root. Mario

Schön daß ich auch mal helfen konnte :-) Mario
Perhaps this helps: Look in folder /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions If there is no gnome.desktop file, then create one with this content: ------------------------ [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Type=XSession Exec=gnome-session TryExec=gnome-session Name=GNOME ----------------------- That should work.
