Wandering Desktop Icons
Hi, Odd how my "Niggles" thread has led to the discussion only of issues about which I did _not_ ask. Is anybody else witnessing the problem with icon positions not being remembered when the log out and back in? If so, have you found out how to resolve the problem? Randall Schulz
Yes, I did. The problem disappeared after I changed my setup. I don't know the english terms sice I use the german locale, but it should be something like desktop -> configure and there behaviour (Verhalten) and there file symbols (Dateisymbole) Uncheck "arrange symbols automatically" (Symbole automatisch anordnen) Well, I do not remember exactely, but I think it was this. Afterwards the problem disappeared. Sincerely Andreas Schenk Am Sonntag, 20. März 2005 23:01 schrieb Randall R Schulz:

Has been discussed. Resolution was to uncheck "Align to Grid" option accessable by <rt-clk desktop><icons> -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery

No. That's not the bug I'm talking about. I do not have the option enabled. What I'm talking about is the fact that every time I log in to KDE the icons are in the same misplaced location they were the time before. Every time, I realign them (by enabling then disabling Align to Grid) and they all shift to their proper location. The next time I log in, they're all back in their previous misaligned positions.

I had about 10 icons vertically aligned on the left. The bottom two liked to wander in the way you described. I consolidated some of these with a link to the media:/ URL so now I only have 5 icons which stay in place. BTW I use 'Line up vertically' instead of enabling and disabling 'Align to grid' to get them in alignment. -- Colin Pinkney http://www.cpinkney.org.uk

Are you manually saving the session and reloading the saved session upon login? Or do you automatically save the current session and reload it upon login? Sounds like you are restoring a previously saved session. Check in Control Center, KDE Components, Session Manager. I use the Restore Manually saved Session in the On Login section. A Save Session item appears in the main KDE Menu in the panel. Once you've rearranged your desktop icons to your liking choose the Save Session and you should be good at the next login. I believe the Restore Previous Session in the On Login section will auto-save your current session whenever you logout. Stan

I believe it's the latter. Whatever configuration of (KDE-aware) applications that were running when I ended the session are restored when I log back in.

That's the setting I have in effect. I forcibly updated it (by clicking "Default", which did not change the settings that were in effect, but did enable the "Apply" button, which I then clicked. In the past, changes I've made to the desktop, both additions and relocations, have been automatically remembered across sessions.

I wonder if icon positions are actually part of the session? I would have though they were apart from it. I thought the session constituted the applications that were running.

No clue. My experience suggests that icon placement on the desktop is saved as part of the session. However I haven't done a manual session save for a few upgrades of KDE on SUSE 9.2 and my icons are always where I left them last session. Hmmm. Stan

( If you are the OP, I got a bit confused as to who started this thread. ) Still, do you have the Suse Watcher enabled, so that it loads it'self eachtime you login ? It has been a bad actor in the icon stories since it appeared. I have managed to kill it off and rarely have wandering icons once that is actually accomplished. Of course, if you have already disabled that, just ignore me.. I don't have any other sensible ideas about this. <VBG> -- j From out in the ocean the dolphins began a song that soon covered the world Chanson pour les enfants Chanson pour tout le monde ( song lyric )

Do you mean the Suse Watcher that monitors the YOU repositories for updates? It seems really odd that it would interact with the desktop icons in that way. Or do you mean SuSE Plugger / SuSE Hardware Tool? But yes, I do keep it (both of them) running and have since I began running SuSE Linux. This problem just started showing up when I did the KDE 3.4 upgrade. I tried shutting it down and disabled its auto-start option. It didn't help. In fact, the first login without it auto-starting, the icons all lined up (some on top of each other) at the top left. (Grumble!) The whole things is so unpredictable.

Thanks for the information. If you don't keep SuSE Watcher running, what method do you use to be notified of updates?

I just do an update automagically each week. I belong to the Suse Security list as well as Security announce, and that is where most of the info for "DO IT RIGHT NOW!" updates usually come from. Most of the other stuff can wait til weeks end ( or beginning or middle whatever day you decide to do it ) it's like backups.. habit is the best protector for both situations. Or that's my completely non humble idea anyway... <G> -- j That's why I wander & follow la vie dansante on the nightwind that takes me to where I want that's all I want .. la vie dansante.

Hi Randall, are there all Desktop Icons wandering, even those in the middle of the Desktop, or yust those witch are next to the screen border. I had this Problem with a fresh ~/.kde that the border ones did wander, and found my solution in screwing down the Fontsize for the Desktop from 11 to 10. Since then the Icons keep staying where there are. Maybe ... Micha
