[opensuse-kde] Unstable packages and KDE:Extra
As far as I can tell there are currently 5 unstable packages in KDE:Extra, which apparently is only supposed to have stable packages: FreeCAD - has not had a stable release apparently plasmoid-translatoid - last stable release was december 1 2010, I don't know whether the stable version still builds polka - has not had a stable release (the version in KDE-extra is an alpha snapshot) smplayer - last stable release was February 2010, I don't know whether the stable version builds libzipios0 - last stable release was in 2001, very unlikely to still build (the version in KDE:Extra is a snapshot from 2007) Further, there is at least 1 package for which the stable version does not build on openSUSE 12.1: kphotoalbum. It has not had a stable release since Nov 2009, but is still getting plenty of updates in git (the git version builds fine on openSUSE 12.1). So we should probably clarify when, if ever, unstable packages should be in KDE:Extra. If it is never, then the above packages should probably be removed. If exceptions are allowed for which there is no working stable version but that are still actively developed, then we should probably include kphotoalbum in KDE:Extra. -Todd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

Todd, This was already clarified in the past when the KDE repositories where changed with regards to naming, etc. I am sure that this could be found in the meeting logs of the KDE team on the opensuse website. KDE:Extra is primarily intended to have only packages with a released version/tarball. KDE:Unstable:Playground is the repo that would hold git/svn snapshots, alpha's, beta's, etc. As that K:U:P is not really suited for the normal user, the agreement was made that KDE:Extra could have exceptions where a snapshot, alpha or beta would be allowed. However this was and will always be a case by case basis. If you believe that a certain package should be part of this exception, then you can put the question up on the IRC channel #opensuse-kde or on this mailinglist. In the past the main unofficial approver for these exceptions was Martin Schlander (cb400f) :-) Raymond -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

That was my understanding as well, but I was specifically told to bring this up with the mailing list by Christophe, so I am doing so. If I understand him correctly, he is under the impression that exceptions are not allowed and that those packages should be removed. Hence the reason why I thought this should be clarified. It is my opinion that kphotoalbum should be an exception, for two reasons: 1. It is actively maintained in git but has not seen a stable release in nearly 2 years 2. The stable realase does not build for openSUSE 12.1+ while the git version does. -Todd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org

<snip>
Addenum about "smplayer": A functioning (Evergreen+OSS) snapshot-version can be found in the packman-repo. No need per se for it in KDE:Extra, as most of its users would be using mplayer from there, too. None the less, thanks for the clarifying. Cheers, Yamaban.

Actually I don't think we discussed the matter for KDE:EXtra - only for KDF. But it seems natural to me that the same rules should apply for both. Namely that non-officially-released software is allowed if: 1) It's known to be relatively stable and functional 2) No stable, reliable, "1:1 replacement" doing the same job exists -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-kde+owner@opensuse.org
