Hi, I've installed the KDE packages from http://software.opensuse.org/download/KDE:/KDE4/openSUSE_10.2 to have a bit of a look & play on my openSUSE 10.2 system.I've installed the standard meta-port plus some other packages. When I try to login with the KDE4 preview session selectewd in KDM, the screen goes black & X restarts. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas about troubleshooting this - Xorg.0.log and kdm.log don't show any useful info. I did try starting X without any window manager & then ran kde4init in an xterm. That gave me an warning: no DBUS session-bus found. Perhaps that's got something to do with it? I checked with ps & dbus seems to be running.

I've been doing some googling and experimented a bit more - if I run sudo /usr/bin/dbus-launcher in a konsole in KDE3 and then run a kde4 app, it runs. I tried the same from an xterm with no window manager running and then try kdeinit4, but I still get the dbus error. Should dbus-launcher be added to some conf file to make a kde4 session work?

The dbus-launch for KDE4 on 10.2 is known to be broken (or so Dirk tells me). It's fixed for FACTORY, but for 10.2 building the dbus from FACTORY would be necessary, or else start it by hand, as you've discovered. You can also hand-start it from the system console, instead of needing a parallel KDE3 session.

Meaning you can run dbus-launch and then Alt-F7 back to kdm, choose the kde4 seesion type & login? I've tried that & it doesn't work. Also tried init 3 && /usr/bin/dbus-launch && init5 and that doesn't work either! Am I doing the wrong thing there?
If I wanted to rebuild dbus-launch, would I do something like http://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source... (there doesn't seem to be a dbus-launch package there, perhaps it's part of dbus itself?), unpack it (not sure how I'd unpack an rpm tho') and run ./configure && make && make install?

No luck there either - when I login, the screen goes black & I get dumped back into my existing session. Perhaps dbus isn't the problem, something else makes it fail?

I've found the solution - delete .kde & .kde4 for my test user & viola, I can start a kde4 session.
