And.... Yes, as so many others, dcopserver is refusing to let me start kde3 Before (7.3 with kde 2) all was fine. I tried everything i saw in the archives of this newsgroup. Nothing helps. So, i have to work with Gnome (works like a charm) or Windowmaker (also ok) or so.. Now, i dont know if any developres of KDE are reading into this newsgroup (they should ;-)), but i think it's obvious that the system with the dcopserver stinks! There's no real doc, nobody understands really what to do, no help - nothing. A bit difficult in that situation to stay with an otherwise great piece of software. Well, i'l wait an other week or so to see if someone has an idea (i don't anymore), and if not i'll switch over. Steven

Did you try removing the ~/.DCOP* files before starting KDE? -ronc -- 8:17pm up 5 days, 10:02, 1 user, load average: 0.03, 0.07, 0.01
I have not. I don't want to make anymore changes to my system because it can destabilize it more, and I need to do work, not mess around with updating and fixing packages :-) On Saturday 25 May 2002 08:29 pm, doc wrote:

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 . 3.0.1 has fixed the crashy Konq for me. But KMail still adds no sig, still has no HTML (some of us want it), kaddressbook still cannot do mail-merge, kalarm still isn't alarming (does when I reboot, but not when I need it... daemon IS running), and Junkbuster doesn't always stop all the ads anymore. (WTF?) 3.0.1 is better, but I'm disappointed. On Sunday 26 May 2002 09:40, Ron Cordell wrote:

No dice. Steven
I understand your frustrations. I had the same problem before. Deleting temporary files did not help me at all. I couldn't find the answer that suited me either. So this is how I solved: 1. Downgrade your XFree86 to the one that comes with SuSE CDs. (Don't forget to uninstall every packgage relating with XFree first. Use YaST1 to do this) 2. OR upgrade your XFree86 to 4.2.0 the latest build. It came out about Mar 2002 (I guess, couldn't remember). If you are using 4.2.0 now, make sure it is the same one that you can find in SuSE ftp site today!!!. Check if RPM packages are the same name!!!. I hope you enjoy using KDE3 as I do. Well, i tried (exept for X11) all suggestions: no dice, nothing works, situation still the same! So: i removed things (to bak dirs). No more KDE, no more /opt/kd... whatever, no more home/user/Desktop or .kde or .kde3, nothing was left. No more DCOP sockets, nothing. No more /tmp files, nothing. I removed all KDE packages with GNORPM ! Then i checked with yast2, all was gone. Then i rebooted, and installed KDE3 from scratch. All went well. Then i tried to start kde3 ...... and ...... DCOP problem as before! They should roast the responsable programmers, and then hang them, and have their ...... well you get the picture. I think they secretly work for Redmond, otherwise i cannot understand someone is capable of such a mess! Unbelievable. Well, an other evening gone up in smoke. Thanks guy's. I'm probably going to be really nasty now, so i stop this e-mail (don't know if there's an age-limit on this NG). Na! One evening more (to the 10 x 24 hours i allready lost). 8.0 is shit, it scandalous that "they" released it. But.. i'll make them pay. I'm going to register for assistence for the first time, and i'll keep them on the phone for as long as it takes. This is the free marketing Gates has wet dreams about. Well, I would say it's more the air between the keyboard and the chair. I've got 30 co-workers that have SuSE 8.0 workstations on their desktops and they love it..oh wait a minute I configured them. Nevermind. ;) If you don't like it..go find something else to use. And please enough with the MS vs Linux crap. do a "killall kdeinit" and remove these files: /tmp/kde-$USER /tmp/ksocket-$USER $HOME/.kde/socket-* $HOME/.kde/tmp-* last two are especially important when you started single KDE apps without the desktop and you are on NFS. bye adrian ********************************************************************** Adrian Schroeter SuSE AG, Deutschherrnstr. 15-19, 90429 Nuernberg, Germany email: adrian@suse.de (479 mails already received today.)
