WINDOWMANAGER=kde startx -- :8 is what you are looking for. You can start a new session directly from an xterm but I usually : Switch to tty1 Ctrl+Alt+F1 Enter login and password (this way I can login as a different user if desired) then WINDOWMANAGER=kde startx -- :8 You can get back to your previous session (fluxbox) by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7 That should do it - -- dh Don't shop at ZipZoomFly.com (GoogleGear.com!) -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFAdMcDBwgxlylUsJARAtbvAJoD7bFqnTTRmxaFbjYtXlar2L4lRgCeJdlz EQ8HehwjJYv4cdtK4i3ditg= =x8wM -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
Thats what I use, too. But does anyone know how to get kdm appearing on the new VT like when I select "start new session" in kde? I think that this is handled by the kdm on vt7 running as root. Can I reach the kdm via dcop or something to trigger the new kdm terminal? Daniel Zitat von David Herman <mesamoo115@attbi.com>:

That should do it

Although this thread is related to starting a new session (now via kdm) from a window manager other than KDE I'm sure the answer could be found in the KDE menu's somehow. I don't know where to look specifically (and would love to find out) there are some items in the kde menu that are not directly accessible via the menu editor. One of these items is "Start New Session" Obviously if one could find out what happens when this menu is selected then they would be well on their way to solving the rest of the problem. So I'll add my 2 questions here Where are these additional kde menu's kept, and (as a side learning project) what diagnostics can I use to find out what command's are run when I select a menu. Hi CWSIV! Didn't you understand the question or didn't I understand your answer? Reread the question carefully and rethink your answer. Correct me, if needed. Daniel Zitat von Carl William Spitzer IV <cwsiv@myrealbox.com>:

I do not know what command is used in KDE, but this comes close, I guess. To start a new X session on the 2nd graphical console: X :1.0 -once -query localhost You should see the login window of your session manager (kdm, gdm, xdm or alike). To start the session on the 3rd graphical console use ':2.0' instead of ':1.0'. Cheers, Leen
