Thats what I use, too.
But does anyone know how to get kdm appearing on the new VT like when I
select "start new session" in kde? I think that this is handled by the
kdm on vt7 running as root. Can I reach the kdm via dcop or something
to trigger the new kdm terminal?

WINDOWMANAGER=kde startx -- :8 is what you are looking for.
You can start a new session directly from an xterm but I usually :
Switch to tty1 Ctrl+Alt+F1 Enter login and password (this way I can login as a different user if desired) then
WINDOWMANAGER=kde startx -- :8
You can get back to your previous session (fluxbox) by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7
That should do it
