[opensuse-kde] phonon-backend-xine dependencies issue in 11.3 with KDF
Hi Guys, I am testing openSUSE 11.3 with KDF, there has some dependencies issue when upgrade to phonon 4.5.0(from KDF), phonon-backend-xine(ver. 4.4.2 from openSUSE 11.3) tagged Requires: libphonon4 = %version in specfile, once we force upgrade to phonon 4.5.0, then phonon-backend-xine will be leave us; if we keep phonon-backend-xine which is exists, then phonon will be not upgrade to 4.5.0, that caused some problem, e.g.launch dolphin failed, output message: dolphin: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libkdeinit4_dolphin.so: undefined symbol: _ZN6Phonon11VideoPlayer5eventEP6QEvent phonon-backend-xine(ver. 4.4.4) has tagged libphonon4 >= %version in KDF, same as in KR47, unfortunately I don't know why we ignore phonon/phonon-backend- packages in KDF, so we cannot get it from KDF, thus I think we need fix phonon-backend-xine in openSUSE 11.3, or other suggestion? -- Best regards, Max -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

I think phonon-backend-xine is intentionally missing in KDF cuz it's unmaintained upstream now. You should probably just remove phonon-backend-xine - and either suffer phonon-backend-gstreamer, or try phonon-backend-vlc from packman instead. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Hi, was also described in the announcement of KDE 4.7.0 SC. Xine backend will be removed, and replaced Backends by GStreamer / VLC. See here: ↓ http://www.kde.org/announcements/4.7/platform.php and here the discussion about Xines distance from phonon: ↓ http://apachelog.wordpress.com/2011/01/21/phonon-family-4-4-4/ Currently you can GStreamer backend with Phonon, if GStreamers packages install from Packman repo, without compromising on using openSUSE 11.3 and KDE 4.7.0 (from KDF). I hope I could contribute to the Enlightenment, have a nice weekend! Yes, I usually using GStreamer backend. I just suspect this issue will confusing normal user who want to use KDF, once they choice keep phonon- backend-xine will be broken somewhere, because they cannot get new phonon from KDF. -- Best regards, Max -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

If people want to use KDF they instantly lose the privilege of calling themselves "normal users" in my book. Using KDF (or any other unsupported repo upgrading their entire DE and core libraries and whatnot) makes them geeks or version whores. And they no longer have any right to complain about little niggles. But maybe latest phonon should have "obsoletes" on phonon-backend-xine or something, to ensure a smooth upgrade path from 11.4 -> 12.1. Not sure how best to handle those sort of things. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Hmm..well, I agree with you :-) Thank you for advice!

I think they don't have a right to whine about bugs, or expect there to be no bugs, or expect them to be fixed immediately, but they certainly should still be reporting them / asking questions. After all this code will go in to stable openSUSE eventually, and it's best if we catch issues early.

This sounds like the right way to do things. Regards, Tejas -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org
