A relatively easy task would be to check if KDE:Extra holds the newest package, and if not, update it to the latest version. You can check out[1] and [2] and then look at the package in KDE:Extra and see if it needs updates. Afterwards, you can branch the package (the first link has some instructions), make your changes, test them, then submit them back to KDE:Extra (submit request).
