I am in the process of upgrading my HP Pavilion dv9000 laptop from
SuSE10.2 to 11.0. Most of the installation process has gone fairly well,
and I have done a clean install to a new disk, not an upgrade.
One of the major difficulties that remains is to get my wireless
networking up and running and so far no joy in doing so. (I had a LOT of
troubles also, with SuSE10.2, so I am not really surprised that I am
having troubles now.... In 10.2 I could not get any of the supplied
drivers to work so had to resort to using NDISWRAPPER and the Windows
driver called bcmwl5.inf for the Broadcom wireless network interface.
Trouble was it was pretty flaky and would crash a lot on me during boot
up.. And I noted the warning about using NDISWRAPPER at my own risk and
that I would not be able to get any support from Novell if I did so....)
I was hoping that in SuSE11.0 there would be a supplied driver for this
interface. I don't really know if there is and hopefully some kind guru
will point me in the right direction. What I do know is that what the
system is installing, by default, does not work so I need help.
The hardwareinfo in Yast2 shows the following (what I think is pertinent
info) about my wireless interface -
Model: "Broadcom BCM4312 802.11a/b/g"
Vendor: pci 0x14e4 "Broadcom"
Device: pci 0x4312 "BCM4312 802.11a/b/g"
SubVendor: pci 0x103c "Hewlett-Packard Company"
SubDevice: pci 0x1360
Driver Modules: "ssb"
Device File: wlan0
Because of the need for some processes to access the internet while the
system is going through its runlevel boot up processes, I have chosen to
install the wlan0 interface using ifup and ifdown rather than the
KNetworkManager, which I don't believe activates any interface until it
is called upon by the user to do so. And that is after the system is
completely booted up.
The following cut and paste shows some additional info and the failure I
am getting when I try to bring up the wireless interface -
marcslaptop:/ # iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
wmaster0 no wireless extensions.

interface wlan0 is not up
trying it this way gives -
marcslaptop:/ # ifconfig wlan0 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory
The DHCP server is working fine and the wireless network is fine... I
have also been fooling around with the NDISWRAPPER to see if I could get
the wireless interface to work but again no joy... So can anyone offer
me a way to get this working? Much appreciate and thanks in advance for
any and all help offered...
